Overdue update: Parted out/scrapped that red 4Runner, sold off a LOT of parts, switched jobs, got a divorce and picked up this: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h57/trialsindan/85%204Runner/IMAG1192_zps90d8b31d.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h57/trialsindan/Franklin/IMAG1175_zpsaae512c6.jpg ...

Re: 1984 SFA getting V6 power

That is so unfair the US never got those sweet 4-doors... after 89 ours got all rounded and lame looking. I'd also love to have a diesel for the torque power! And today I picked up a topper for it: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h57/trialsindan/4runner/212topper011.jpg One of these days I'll get ...

Re: 1984 SFA getting V6 power

Here in the breaker yards the scoop choices are minimal at best. Most of the scoop-equipped hoods are factory and not removable; I mean: the scoop can't be taken from the hood since it's all one piece of meatl. I was thinking it would be cool to get a scoop from "over there" to be differen...

Re: 1984 SFA getting V6 power

What year truck do you have? The 79-89 trucks I've seen with the 3.4 swap have been body-lifted or hood scooped from what I've seen. My buddy has a hole in his 79's hood: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h57/trialsindan/wheeling/Indyrun11-20118.jpg And Doug has a holy hood in his 86; you can kinda ...

Picked up another top-shift transfer case this weekend for the low-low price of $25... with transmission attached! The trans is junk (odd-ball side shift thing) but the t-case works as it should. http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h57/trialsindan/GROND%20rebuild/casetwo.jpg It's all coming together.....

Re: 1984 SFA getting V6 power

Whatever I build next will be called "El Cheapo" since a LOT of main parts were free or dirt cheap: engine, tires with wheels, spare tire and this t-case. I have ben keeping an eye out for a 4Runner for under $1000; no luck yet.

I am starting to work up a deal to sell the 84 cab/chassis but keep the axles. Right now I just want to sell the 84's cab, bed and frame so I can start building a 4Runner or Surf Edition if that's what these are known as "over there". My wife says I can only have one project at a t...

Re: 1984 SFA getting V6 power

I have no idea for certain, but a friend has swapped a 3.4 into his 79 Hilux and I think his cost between $4000 and $5000 after it was all said and done. I am expecting this to cost about the same since we are using similar parts; but my engine was free  Here is my basic plan: $500 (?) fres...

Re: 1984 SFA getting V6 power

Nothing much new, I have decided to get an automatic transmission for easier wiring. From what I've read I can use the autos from a T100 truck or regular 4Runners. I will still need a geared transfer case adapter though; doesn't seem to be a way around that.

Using a R150F transmission; they bolt to the V6 engines. I will need an adaptor to fit the gear-drive transfer to it though... and that costs about $350.

Re: Warning... All SFA Owners!

Thanks! It's not mine; I'm doing it for a friend's dad who wants to keep it until the tires fall off. The money from this side-job is going towards rebuilding my new (for me) engine: a 3.4 liter 5VZ-FE. I have grand plans to get a supercharger for it since there is no way it'll be on the trail this ...

I have been slowly working on the front suspension; started a new job back in January so my time for this project has decreased. I'll start a build thread instead of posting here; keeps it more organized I think.

It's been a little while and I have been busy, but not in the shop. We've been visiting family for Christmas and New Year's, and my brother-in-law had his 50th birthday last week in San Diego so we spent a few days out there. Back to business! Before we left I tore apart both cylinder heads, measure...

I have 5.29 gears now and a single stock t-case; after the engine rebuild I'll start a dual-case setup with a 4.7 reduction gear to make it nice and slow. The cams I've been looking at are around 261 degrees of duration and claim "low-end power" so we'll see who's telling the truth. Are th...

Re: Greetings from USA

The 20R cylinder head fits the "early" 22R block (up to 1984 year) and it has better airflow than the stock 22R intake. Something about the combustion chambers; I forget exactly. Depending on how it's built, it should bump up the compression ratio a bit for better top-end power. It's kind ...

Greetings from USA

Hi folks, I found this site by searching for building information/ideas for my '84 Toyota regular cab. Right now it needs the engine rebuilt since it spun a bearing last month. I plan on doing a 20R/22R hybrid build; don't know if anyone has heard of that "over there". If I had the money I...
