Re: Moz trip - 10/2013
Thanks Stuart, that sounds like a super trip! I will be driving a similar route in two weeks time and, although I have used the shortcut, I was never aware of the second route to the north. Is it easy enough to find from both the Moamba side and from the Xinavane side? Your guidance would be much ap...

Re: Finding the engine number on the Vigo
Francisco, I bought the 2007 bakkie second hand from a private seller on a flying visit from London to Cape Town. It looks sound, the seller seemed honest, but I made the cardinal error of not verifying the engine number because I could not find it ( and he had no idea where to look!). I am sure I h...

Re: Finding the engine number on the Vigo
Excuse my ignorance Hoppy, but if an owner changes the engine and then sells the vehicle , would that be picked up at the roadworthy test and the particulars changed on the license and registration document?

Re: Finding the engine number on the Vigo
Thanks for all the help guys. Can you imagine the shennanigans at the SA-Moz border post if I was unable to verify the engine number on the vehicle? Just the sort of BS the customs officials on both sides love.

Finding the engine number on the Vigo
This is going to attract a tonne of ridicule! Having had a 1988 SFA forever, I have recently added a 2007 DC 4.0l to the fleet and am coming to grips with all of it's "modern" technology. First problem: I can't find the lovely plate that should be riveted to the firewall displaying the VIN...

Thanks so much for that Tony. Your solution makes perfect sense. I will continue my quest for a body shop that still "fixes" and does not just "replace".

Repairing a loadbin
The inner skin of the loadbin on my 1988 SFA single cab has cracked where the front wall joins the sidewalls on both sides. I can only assume this has been caused by too many people sitting on top of the heavy steel canopy while careering through the bush; I have never seen this problem described el...

The Patrol has a huge reputation in Australia and Zimbabwe. Are there many available in SA's used car market? I will start trawling.

Re: Towing a ski boat and overlanding- What to choose?
I think you are stuck with a Temporary Import Permit for only 30 days each time you bring it into SA, in much the same way as when you take your SA vehicle into Moz.

Re: Towing a ski boat and overlanding- What to choose?
Digby, just when I am reconsidering the D4D instead of the LC, a D4D owner suggests the LC! I see you are from Nelspruit; have you, or do you know of anyone who has, bought a Moz vehicle and imported it into SA? Unfortunately the new vehicle is to stay in Nelspruit for transport to our site. The Hil...

Re: Towing a ski boat and overlanding- What to choose?
Thanks Jaco, I have considered the Prado, but I don't really know the vehicle. I am very much a man who likes to manually lock hubs, engage low range, lock diffs etc. I was under the impression the Prado does all of that for you and if the system fails while in the boonies...... My worry with the au...

Towing a ski boat and overlanding- What to choose?
Hi Guys I am sitting in the UK and in the process of retiring the '88 SFA, single cab, 2.2 petrol to Mozambique. I travel regularly to our place in Moz and need to keep a vehicle in Nelspruit for this purpose. The vehicle needs to be: 1. Reliable, simple and safe for the ghastly Moxambique roads 2. ...

Re: Perils of leaving a Hilux unused
Many thanks for the comprehensive response Mud Dog. I hear what you say about the oil premixed with the fuel in a 2-stroke and it makes a lot of sense. Maybe I am making too much of this fuel deterioration problem, but: *There has always been this suspicion that Moz fuel has more contaminants in it ...

Perils of leaving a Hilux unused
Hi guys, I would appreciate some advice from the "ou manne" if possible. I live in the UK, leave my 1988 S/C petrol Hilux parked in Nelspruit for periods of 3-9 months at a time, then come out and thrash it around Mozambique on holidays. Of course I have endless problems with the fuel syst...

Bench seat on the 1988 single cab SFA
Is there anyone in the club that has fitted the front seat from a double cab SFA into a single cab from the same era? I am 6 000km from my single cab at present and trying to source a replacement seat through the club. I've been offered the seat from a double cab, but have no way of knowing if they ...

Bleeding hilarious Bushwacker! Some of his others: 1. A dyslexic man walked into a bra. 2. I walked into a bar the other day - seven stitches! 3. My grandad was lucky enough to find, in his attic, a Picasso and a Stradivarius. Unfortunately the violin was made by Picasso and the painting was done by...

Newby member-Trigg's broom
Hi guys/Hello ouens. :beach: What a fantastic site you have! I am desperately keeping a 1988 SFA Hilux going with no help from Toyota and have learned more from browsing the site in one week than I have learned in 22 years of ownership. "Trigg's broom" (more about that later) is pretty muc...
