Those engines (the blocks) at least are still in production so you can maybe even source a new one. There are fleets of minibuses in South Africa that use them still so we can buy them new. Depending on how much you want to spend, and how long you are prepared to wait, you might find that a South Af...

For the "L" series engines I don't think that there is much difference in performance between any of them. My 3L was hard pressed to maintain 100 km/h on the flat, and forget about uphill. It was incredible off road, in technical, rocky terrain with great low down torque and amazing engine...

Hi there Good luck with your purchase. The old naturally aspirated diesel (the "L" series) are donkeys. Slow and steady. I had a 2.8 (3L) and it struggled to maintain 100km/h. We'd joke that it would go anywhere at 80 though. They do tend to have an overheating issue, so an EGT gauge is hi...

As far as I remember, and I could be wrong, the temp gauge is "damped" in its normal range, so that it stays steady, even if the coolant changes temperature. It may be that the circuit that accomplishes the "damping" is no longer working correctly.

Yes, there are a few around. It's the same block as the KZTE engine so it fits, I think getting the electronic side to work is more of an issue as you don't have many of the sensors needed. If you want to do it, you should probably get a full front cut, with the ECU, harness and engine.

The early KZTEs had problems with the heads. They fixed the issues in the 2002 model year, so an '02-05 model is the better buy.

Also agree that a 2 owner, 150k km bakkie at R45k is too good to be true. They sell for north of R120k easily.

At minimum you'll need:
- The transfer case
- The front axle and suspension
- The wiring harness and ECU
- The interior pieces, gear levers/switches etc

Go ask at Toyota for prices on all of those, then (at least) double the cost for labour, and you'll have a good idea of cost.

Why not put the rails across the canopy (perpendicular to the vehicle long axis), rather than along the canopy? That way you can secure them to the cross braces with through bolts rather than to the edge.
