Spoke to Saayman spring works and they recommend adding an additional leaf. The guy said he had seen this problem on many OME springs/leaf sets. Quoted R7000 to do the whole lot including retensioning the old springs . Don't know if this is a decent price. Don't go this route .... chances are more ...

The points-gap should be 0.4mm and not 0.63 like the book says, unless it's a very old Fomoco distributor, that's usually the problem I had one of these motors in my first Hilux. The first thing I did was have the distributor reconditioned and converted to Electronics.. Cost about R1500 if I rememb...

Another thing these motors are prone to do is have a tappet noise. No matter how carefully you set it.
But with a bit of careful grinding and elbow grease it is easily rectified..

Iwould first go through all the stuff suggested by the two "Dogs", and only then start stripping on the motor.

If all above is checked and it still wont start.
Have you checked the fibre gear in the front of the motor. The Essex motors are notorious for stripping those gears...
