Welcome Ian. FIRSTLY it dont matter which of the vechiles you choose,as long as it is a TOYOTA.For a long and intense overland trip in Africa,I would go for the least complicated, least electronic drive chain.Good luck and we await to hear of your adventures.

The worn shaft causes theshaft to float and results in the gears and bearings getting damag...

I owned one of these dc 4x4. If the load bin is original as per the foto, the 4x4 is an import. The first local produced hiluxes used the under tailgate rear lights and the loadbin is approx 50mm longer than the imported produced vechiles.

The bearing is obtainable from a Bearing Man or other like suppliers. My shaft was worn so I sent it into engineering shop and had a hardened sleeve installed to bring the front to origonal size.Been okay for about 50 000 clicks so far.

Re: I think I need a new clutch and a 5th gear bearing.

When removing the gearbox, check the spigot bearing, located on the flywheel, and the front of the input shaft to see if it is worn.Especially on a high mileage vechile. This also caues the shaft to float and results in bearing and gear wear.
