Replacement batteries for Garmin Nuvi GPS - none in RSA!?

Post by Polarbear2008 »

I have recently been informed that Garmin DON'T stock any replacement batteries for their Nuvi range of GPSs. This means that an otherwise perfectly fine device, when that battery capacity runs out (as all rechargeables do in the end) has to be taken to Avnic and all they will do is offer you an "upgrade" at a reduced price  How is that for making sure you move boxes!

The only exception to this is the Nuvi 500/550 which, from what I gather, you can change like a cellphone battery?

I have found at least three aftermarket battery suppliers in the USA, that I am in contact with at present, to see what the viability is of bringing these into the country, and saving a lot of otherwise fine GPSs, and saving their owners a lot of unnecessary money!

Please give me an indication of the sort of interest I would have, should I do this, by sending me a PM. If it pans out, I could go as far as saying that I would even fit the battery, as it is dead simple and just a matter of postage on the owner's part! I have repaired Ericsson cellphones before, and the concept is 99% the same.

I cannot believe that in a time when everyone is shouting about eco-friendliness Garmin is taking such a throw-away stance with regards to this issue!

In my opinie steeds veel goedkoper as om jou Nuvi or Quest weg te gooi!

PM my as julle belangstel.

Interesting! Theunis, can you possibly post a photo of this battery, as well as its specs? I haven't opened a Nuvi yet.

Hmmmm .... the Nuvi 500 is rated waterproof to a depth of 1 metre for an hour. Once opened, can the seal be restored? .....

Yes the seal is restored as it works on a similar principle of a door rubber and latch.

I opened mine as I have fitted the T4A Sd micro card in my Nuvi 500. The battery is a Li-ion Battery, rating 3.7V 1800 mAh.

I have also seen at some Garmin outlets you do get replacement batteries...Havent checked if it is only for certain models only though..

This is not good of the suppliers. IMO poor service!

On the other hand, I have never had a faulty battery on any GPS.

By the time the battery is poked, I would rather replace the unit with an upgraded / newer unit. But that's just me....

Yes the Nuvi 500 battery is designed like a pda/cellphone battery and is meant (from what I gather) to be replaceable.

Try it at your own risk! I would be interested to hear this, but nervous too. I don't know what the Garmin & HP pinouts are, but of they were the same there should be no problem.

Does your HP charge with a normal Mini-USB cable on your PC? If so, it should work. I do know thought, that the pinouts on the Garmin are a bit funny, in that when you plug in a normal pc-type USB cable, it goes into "PC-mode" and does not load the maps. There is a resistance needed on one of the pins, then the Garmin will go into "map" mode and load the maps - same as what the car chargers do.

Here is some info in this regard: http://pinouts.ru/GPS/garmin_nuvi_power_pinout.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hope this helps!

The HP PDA got a USB cable which one plug into the charger ( AC input ) to charge the battery. The other end of the cable fit on my 710 so I was hoping to use that HP charger to charge the Garmin. When I use the car charger the battery don't last long on its own and apparently one should AC charge the Garmin twice a month which will be a full proper charge.

Brilliant! One thing this thread reminded me to do was to put my 276C on charge, not good to leave it in an uncharged state for too long.

The 276C has a little battery inside - probably lithium - and I think this also derives its charge through the main battery. Good to keep it powered up once in a while when not in use.
