Don't know the 1410, but my 500 has been a fantastic tool, both on and off road. It's also pocketsize for when you're on foot and it's waterproof. The track back facility is a must if you go bundu bashing. But F_D (Eric) should be able to advise you better.

At this stage the 500 is still an excellent deal. I believe they have had some software problems with the 1410, but this would be sorted out sooner rather than later.

I like the 500, they just had a 1410 at a cracking good price, so was wondering if the 500 was worth the extra R700 bucks. but then there is also the Colorado....

I would say yes, definitely. The 500 also features a replaceable lithium-ion battery, the 1410 does not.

Re: Which GARMIN? Nuvi 500 or 1410?
Hi guys, hope this discussion is still open.... I am totally new to the GPS thing and would like to get the NUVI 500 myself. I found
the following webpage useful (http://www.gpsmagazine.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and found detailed info on how to use it. Is this still a good buy,
considering any news of it being replaced with a newer model. Would'nt want buy it if it will be replaced soon. Any thoughts on
this one? I am busy building up my travel/camping gear for my Lux.

Re: Which GARMIN? Nuvi 500 or 1410?
I have both. The 1410 is certainly more visible with twice the size screen of the 500, but the 500 is a great little unit. As far as I recall, the 500 has additional features compared to the 1410. The 500 prices have also tumbled to less than half of what they were originally.

Best to look around for a secondhand 276c. But you'd be very lucky to find one.

I've got a 276 too, but it ain't for sale!
The Nuvi 500 is not currently discontinued, but I suspect it might be when present stocks run out, so maybe it's a good idea to grab one while you still can!

My mind is set on nuvi 500. Been searching the web and the best price so far is R2559. Any one aware of a shop (not on the
web) in Cape Town area at a similar price range.

I think the software issues have now been sorted, I haven't noticed any problems with mine. I did check that it had the latest firmware, however.

Re: Which GARMIN? Nuvi 500 or 1410?
I spoke to the guys at Garmin SA and they basically said that the 500 was the best all rounder. From what I understood aswell is that Garmin SA will be bringing in the 550 around mid year. They did not say if it was replacing the 500 or if the 500 was being discontinued. He did say that the 550 was an upgrade to the 500 with basically the same functionality.
So I went onto the Ebay website and purchased the 550 - arrived about a week ago, $280 including delivery. No problems as of yet.

Re: Which GARMIN? Nuvi 500 or 1410?
What I like about the 500 is the removable and replaceable battery. If something goes wrong with the battery you can throw the battery away, and fit a new battery. (of course dispose of batteries responsibly).
The splash proof character of the unit is also beneficial.

Re: Which GARMIN? Nuvi 500 or 1410?
Dingo...My understanding is that the only difference is the preloaded map. Checked a few reviews and appears to be
targeting the Canadian market. "Nuvi 550 has preloaded maps for the continental United State plus Canada
and Alaska, while the Nuvi 500 has preloaded maps for the continental United State plus Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
Other than that, the two are identical" have noticed any difference since you have it, what is the upgrade.

I also have both- 500 has T4A on and the 1410 streetmaps. No problems with either. Drawback on 500 is lack of blue teeth.

Re: Which GARMIN? Nuvi 500 or 1410?
I gave my 205w for my son and bought a 1410 (with streetmaps and T4A), but I find it much slower to start up comparing with the 205, other wise can't complain about it. The 205 also had T4A on it. I still use the etrex for off road.
Is the slow start up normal?, while we are on the topic.

My previous GPS was a Nuvi 200, so I honestly couldn't tell you of differences between the 500 and the 550.
You are correct in what you said about the pre-loaded maps and also when I looked at the specifications of the two, there was no difference.

Re: Which GARMIN? Nuvi 500 or 1410?
Thanks guys, I bought the nuvi 500 yesterday. So far happy. The information gathered on the web
in researching this madel has been quite conflicting. It indicated that this model does not mention the street names when giving instruction but mine does. I gues that involves the firmware. Whats the benefit in getting the Track4Africa. Does the garmap not cover the same things? What should I get next, any suggestions?

Re: Which GARMIN? Nuvi 500 or 1410?
Just a note: we downloaded the entire package 2 years ago, seemed like a bargain......NO..... cause you cant visit ALL those countries unless you are planning an overland trip for 1 year solid.Toyfan wrote:Sorry guys, ignore my question about tracks4africa. Their webpage says it all.
Rather select the country you are planning on visiting a month before and download it! They update their maps frequently!

Re: Which GARMIN? Nuvi 500 or 1410?
yes, I thought of that. I am still a groenie in 4x4 land. So SA maps will work best for now as will only attempt to see this beautiful country first before attempting past our borders. Thinking of going for 4x4 training..... or can I do some reading and practice on the easy trails. Any advice?
Re: Which GARMIN? Nuvi 500 or 1410?
IMO it's abserlutely essential to complete a 4x4 course, you learn the basics, build confidence in yourself, get to know your vehicle and it's limitations.

Training is always a good thing, but I would suggest to hook up with your local guys when they organise outings for a start. Once you are a little more familiar with what it's all about, the training will be more meaningful. Just MO.Thinking of going for 4x4 training..... or can I do some reading and practice on the easy trails. Any advice?
IMO this takes years pf practice, it's really about your own limitations to start off, so again it comes down to getting out there with the guys, even after you have done the training.get to know your vehicle and it's limitations.
