What aerial for VHF - if mounted on Bullbar of Croeza?

Post by HennieJ2 »

Hi All,

Dankie

Hennie

Oom Hennie,

Moet nou nie my brein tax so vroeg op 'n lei Sondag middag nie, asb! En wat is 'n "Bullbat"?

1. Zara type antenna is about as strong as you can get, there are weaker ones available but we do not generally use those.
2. The Cab will affect range, the canopy as well if it is a metal one. If F/G, the canopy won't make much difference.
3. Yep - transmission away from the metal-part of the car will be weakest as there is no ground plane. Towards the bonnet will be better, but bear in mind my the comments in (2) above.

A Mobile antenna is designed to be mounted slap-bang in the middle of a metal vehicle roof, which is generally the highest clear point on a vehicle offering unrestricted operation. Anywhere else will always be a compromise. However, the swivel mount antennas such as the Zara60, if mounted as high as possible on the B or C pillar, will be a close second choice.

Bull Bar mount is convenient but there are range restrictions. For convoy use however, this will be fine.

Oom Hennie

Sodra daai radio gefit is moet ons hom bietjie toets hier in Witbank.

We were in Pretoria on Saturday evening and tested the range with one of my friends also with a VHF and Zara 130 (I think). We were able to communicate on a 4/5 basis from the N4 (between Donkerhoek and the Cullinan off ramp) to the N1 just south of the Zambesi off ramp.

According to MapSource this is in the order of 30km in a straight line :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:
