220 Volt AC generator for vehicle

Post by pietpetoors »

There was a guy at the shop today with this product and I wondered;
Now that we all use inverters, is there still a need/use for this?
Is it maybe more stable/robust than an inverter?

Is a 220 Volt AC generator you hook onto your vehicle's engine.

a 4.5 Kw system cost about R20k for the whole system.

http://fabcopower.com/generat/bgen.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Comes from the US of A

Would you pay R20k for it and what will you use it for?

I guess you could run power tools off it, basically converting your vehicle into a genny. 20K, no thanks, you could by a decent generator for half that price, also would be cheaper than running the engine.

Ja nee daai maak ook nie vir my sin nie. Kan ook nie sien dat daai generatortjie 4.5Kw uitsit as mens hom vergelyk met die units wat so 5.2Kw uitsit nie.

^^ Agreed. The thought of a 220v supply under the bonnet next to a hot petrol engine does not over-excite me as well.

I guess for a guy like Jacques in the Free State who installs masts in the middle of nowhere it must be a handy tool because you do not have to carry your big (half the price) gennie on the back of your Hilux and it takes up half the load bin. Your gennie is always there, cannot forget it at home and you do not have to take extra fuel.

Remember years ago you had one of those which you could even use to weld with.

Built in batteries and inverter is quiet, is always available as long as you have battery power that's charged for free (almost, if you take the cost of your panel over time), you don't have to run your motor and it's about ¼ of the price.

If on the other hand, as Pieter mentioned, you have to run some heavier machinery, a stand-alone genny is far more versatile.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

My neighbour has lot a fair number of working hours due to load shedding.

Yet a genny that could drive his 230mm grinder and other heavy tools would by too big and bulky and would adversely affect their packing space in the Caddy .....

even then, on most sites he would have to run LONG leads from the parking area to where he actually needs the power.

Nice idea...not for leisure market.
But for guys on the road doing repairs to vehicles and so on, very handy.
I had to spec a similar setup with deep cycles and dc chargers, then this is reasonable and no batteries in the back of the van.
Fleet of trucks, maintenance guy...might sell

years ago we had a similar alternator on our maintenance vehicle that we used for welding purposes. Dual purpose it was a normal alternator and a welder, tow in one.

Piet,
I had one of these fitted to my old SFA which helped a few times in the bush where I could weld, drill or grind...
It also had a three point plug which were used for power tools...
Very handy to have and were a lot cheaper then, but also still very expensive for the time...
The vehicle had to idle/Rev at about 2000 rpm to generate the required amount of power to operate the power tools or to weld...
When I upgraded to the Vigo, I had nowhere to mount this in the new vehicle...

I also had one of these fitted to my first SFA.In my case the alternator light never comes on when the ignition was on (ACC).(Was it the same in your case Edge)That always worries me because I will never know when the fan belt breaks or the alternator stop charging.Otherwise it was a very handle tool to have.
