LED light on bumper

Post by demond1 »

Hi Guys.

This weekend I did a trip through the baviaanskloof with the recent addition to my family, the Hilux. The vehicle was great... although I didn't have to engage 4x4 once.

On the way in, it was dark. I though it was the perfect time to make use of the LED light on the bumper. I put it on, but there was virtually no difference. After investigation I found that the rough road had rattled the height setting bolts loose, and the light was pointing straight up.

On the way home, after finishing the rough roads, I heard a loud rattle when turning left. Fears of CV joints filled my head. After some investigation, the LED light's bolts that connected it to the bumper had totally rattled loose. The nuts where gone. I ended up cable tying the light to the bar and the problem was gone.

I've been thinking of ways to secure it to the bumper more securely, but now im worried that the actual brackets that the light fits in to wont last under a regular load of a rough road.

Any advice on how to secure it? Might be time to consider a different mounting point?

I bought my LEDs and resistors from ebay in bulk. I found the warm white LEDs work great for headlights and look more like halogen or sealed beam lights than the cool whites do.

Hi Demond.
I have used locknuts and also spring washers to secure the bolts and nuts.
But I will highly recommend also to use a drop of lock tight on the lock nuts for extra strength.
But if you lock them solid I am sure they will not unlock again.
