Family_Dog wrote:Cassie, I wonder if your antenna and/or cable & connector is not giving problems? Did you perhaps try the following:

* Swap your microphone with another GX300 for a test
* Swap the radio complete with another one for a test?

Otherwise, you will either have to come visit me or post the radio to me so that we can check it out for you.

Thanks Eric but we seemed to have sorted the problem. I picked up the power from cables inside the cab on the first installation. Although these wires could supply enough current and voltage, it seemed like it introduced some sort of electric noise on the unit. Saturday morning I quickly ran a pair of wires directly from the battery and voila!!!

SO... I ripped that wires out again yesterday (no fuse on the line) and will be installing a nice pair wires (fused) to the radio.

Next step is to come and see you bout a VHF radio

What I actually meant with the one way comm's is guess who did the most of the talking   :silent: :silent:

Johan, ons beoog om die ORRA se frekwensies tegebruik. Ons is besig om 'n plan te maak dat hierdie forum lid word van die AAWDC om dit te doen. Hulle het net een frekwensie, maar dit is goedgekeur vir oorals in SA.

The sound quality is fine with the right aerial, they don't work well with the compact aerials... we have 2 in use in our 4x4 group, Gareth installed it with the compact aerial, sound quality wasn't lekker, so he changed over to the long whip type, sound quality was much better...
and it's compact in terms of installation which is great!

Hentey,

A while ago you asked me about the availability of Chargers for the Motorola P020 Portable Radio. My apologies, I was supposed to come back to you sooner, and now I can't find the original post.

I have four or five charger pockets for these radios, brand new, but without transformers. They require a 12V DC 15W supply, so I can order a suitable transformer for them, or you can also charge them directly from a car battery coupled to the charger pocket with a suitable jack.

Hentey,

The radios will be fine. The P020 was one of Motorola's smaller radios, destined for the Asian market, but they were sold here in 2002/2003 or thereabouts. As far as I remember, it uses a 7.5v battery of unknown capacity. We used to fit after-market batteries (not Motorola) which had a slightly longer operating life. I'll have a look for you tomorrow (when I'm at work) what charger options are available, but otherwise it's simple enough to make up a cigarette lighter type cable and just plug that into the charger.

Dag,

Sorry FD dirent see your reply, yes I will take 2 of those chargers so that I can charge the portable's in the car. Do you need xformers for them? I see that on the charger it is 230vac-12vdc or let me rather say a rectified dc.

In reference to Jaque's lengthy post above:

ICASA (not ICAASA) is certainly not concerned about the use of 29MHz AM radios in South Africa, although it is also true that only Australia & RSA seem to make use of the frequency. In reference to a 29MHz radio "nog altyd" outperforming a VHF radio, this is pure nonsense. VHF operates line of sight although we have, in fact achieved distances of 150km plus on two VHF 25w radios in the Transkei, but this is certainly not the norm and 30-40km is easily achievable on an open road, terrain conditions permitting. 27MHz AM radios sre limited to 4W (or 12W SSB) and are most susceptible to long-distance skips, but that is not the norm and nor can it be considered as always being obtainable. In fact, it is seldom obtainable and the norm here is 3-5km under good conditions. During electrical thunderstorms, even that is not achievable.

Midland radios are imported through Dirk Bothma in Senekal, coincidentally, Jaques is also from Senekal, and although it is a first class radio, I am sure Dirk would not approve of Jacques jumping in here and spamming the forum with the full technical details of his products. I am therefore removing the technical details, but Jacques is quite welcome to post a link to a website so that forumites may look up these specifications for themselves.

Dag F D en ander forum lesers.
Ek sien nou ek het bietjie negatiewe aandag getrek met my stellings oor die radios wat ek in my bakkie gesit het en hoe ek dit ervaar as ek dit gebruik.Ek wil graag omverskoning vra as ek enige iemand ontstel het of as iemand voel dat ek uit plek uit was oor wat ek geskryf het.Dit was egter nie my motief gewees nie,so daarom weer vra ek omverskoning.

Eric, the 27mhz,is it the old CB radios that we used with channel 21 as the emergency channel and with the side band channels up to 99 channels?

Johan, the CB radios on sale here in SA were modified American 40-channel units. The modification required was to limit the allowable channels from channel 19 (which was then regarded as the 'Calling Channel') to Channel 27, which was fondly referred to as the 'Uppers' or 'Lowers' channel, for SSB, although you could, of course, use SSB on any of the channels. CB's were good fun in the days when (and especially before! ) they were first legalised; many good friendships were formed and the guys had very good intentions even forming Clubs in most areas and donating a CB to the local Fire department for Emergency Services on channel 21, as you correctly state. That has fallen completely by the wayside now, which is a bit of a pity as it was useful and did indeed serve a purpose.

There are still CB's available as Jacques stated, but in general their use has all but faded out in favour of 29MHz - locally here in SA anyway. But CB is still very much on the go between Truckers in the USA and I somehow also feel it would have been a better option for SA rather than 29MHz. But then, 27MHz CB got completely out of control when the school kids of the time (probably half the forum members here...  ) got hold of it and eventually killed the medium.

Yip i must agree that i think the old CB radio was the best with a slightly longer distance than the 29mgz.

Which radio would be the better one to purchase in VHF. Would a hand held that transmits about the same as a 29mgz but you can use the field programmable mode but limited to distance or a fixed VHF that one cannot field program but gives a better distance. Remember if you have guys on the same freq on different outings about 30km apart that can talk over each other with base mounts but not with hand helds. I was amassed the other day in the rain i picked up a distance of 20km with hand helds

Which one is the best choice in VHF.

Clarence, the VHF handheld radios all have pretty much the same characteristics, so you could look at any of the popular ones, i.e. Kenwood, Vertex, Icom, HYT TC610 (I don't like the other HYT models), Motorola and then lastly, but not least, the Kirisun PT3300 or PT4200 are both good value for money.

On the subject of 27mhz or VHF...

On our recent Hessaquas trip the majority of the guys(6) had 27mhz radio, but of course there was a few of guys(3, 1 using a hand held unit) that had VHF units... we had 1 roaming VHF handheld as well... what we did was appoint a co-pilot as the VHF-27mhz relay person(Gareth has both radio's)... end result wasn't too bad... a bit of broken telephone of course... the relaying service was kept to important messages... not the jokes and funny stuff... this meant that 27mhz chaps had rip-roaring fun, while the VHF only guys were left out the loop!

My suggestion is buy the most popular unit(27mhz/VHF) between the friends you most travel/4x4 with first... then if you got the bucks to buy both... then hang why not...

The bottom line... travelling in convoy or crawling through obstacles... radio's make it so much more enjoyable!

I have both at the moment. If I can make a recommendation, don't even bother with a 29MHz. It will work perfect on a road convoy but as soon as you go off-road, things change.

VHF on the other hand  When I picked up my bakkie in Klerksdorp Monday last week, me and Eric talk a bit on the VHF radios while I was driving towards Jhb. I got as far as the other side of Stilfontein before we lost Comms and there were a lot of buildings and trees between us.

Also at the Rock Crawl the previous weekend, while I was on the Rock, I could speak to my wife at Moegatle lodge about 5km away and she was talking on a handheld VHF radio.

I bought the following items from Eric and I will really recommend them to anyone:
Kenwood TK-7100 (64ch VHF mobile in car)

Kirisun PT4200 (16ch VHF hand held)
