Mounting 2-Way Radios

Post by Family_Dog »

Bulldog has both a VHF and AM radio installed. I thouight it might be useful to show where I have installed them.

Radios 2 resize.jpg
Radios 1 resize.jpg

The GX300 Mic is just lying loose, I have not yet fitted a Mic hang-Up clip. The VHF radio Mic is installed to the left of the speedometer housing.

Let's see some pics of how you have mounted your radios, it will be of use to those installing their radios for the first time.

My Gx300 is mounted in the same position as yours Oom, my mike clip is where your locker (?) switch is (above the handbrake lever)

Was not sure where to mount the VHF but remembered that Thys mounted his dragon between the drivers seat and the centre pillar so I did the same.... Almost mounted it on the dash

The radio has 5-tone signalling built in, so I can program the Mic buttons for various functions:

* Selectively call just one radio out of a fleet of, say 100 radios for a private conversation (the other 99 won't hear us)
* With suitable additional equipment, I can phone anyone, anywhere, using the Telkom network
* We use it to enable/disable individual Repeater slots for various users.

Uncle Eric, It never had one. So I designated that spot for the mic :)

I also ordered a roof console (the one Riaan posted about) and will be moving the radios into that. Just depending on the roofconsole after I modified it to fit the Lux (I think they are purpose built for the LC)

Cassie & Riaan, please use proper red/black autowire direct from the battery to the radio when you do the roof console. Riaan, if you need some, come fetch when you're next in town. Cassie, ditto!

Aerial in mounted on the roll bar... the higher the better... it's a Webb full whip type...

My lux looks like a full scale remote control car! I'll post pics of the extended shackles soon as well...

Oom Eric, Can you give me the specs on the wire you are referring to? Maybe a pic? I bought some descent wire a while back when I was contemplating fixing the compressor somewhere in the bakkie but have not done this yet. This wire is red and black (as opposed to...?) ripcord style (if memory serves me correct) with a grey sleeve. If I remember correctly the wire is 1.5 or 2mm.

Eric if you look very closely in his second pic, you will see what looks to be aluminium (or something similar) just above the plastic of his rear view mirror. A very neat job

Hi Eric, thanks to Cassie I don't have to answer, we cut an aluminium plate and pop rivet the radio bracket onto the plate and screwed it onto the same screws as the rear view mirror. The only problem with this installation is I don't know where to install the mic bracket, currently the radio is off, I removed the mic and is in the cubby hole. Nico

White Fang's two-way radios...
GX300_GM360.jpg

The VHF radio in the background behind the GX300 is a remote-mount Motorola GM360 VHF Mobile radio. The actual body of the radio can be mounted either under the driver's seat or at the rear, behind the back rest of either a double cab or single cab.

The remote mount kit (only available for certain radios) is practically a 'must' for today's vehicles, which are not designed for practical accessories such as two-way radios like the older models were.

Single DIN
Sal die double DIN eenheid in my bakkie pas sonder modifikasies?

As dit kan, dan soek ek `n double din "boksie".

We had the VHF radios fitted at the begining of the month, new Motorola CM140 models with quater wave antenna (Zara 60) as F_D proposed.

Here the radio is fitted to the back of the centre console with the radio bracket

The antenna cut to quater wave

Handy to have your radio set to also be able to scan through all the channels

Scanning needs to be activated when the radio is initially programmed. Most dealers (ourselves included) prefer not to activate this at it is not really necessary - has more nuisance value than anything else. In general, ORRA 1 is always the "Calling" channel (remember Ch 19 in the good ol' (bad ol'?) CB days. From there, one would pick a channel.

The only instance that we do activate scanning is for the Farmer's Mid Band (Burg. B) radios, where channel 2 is purely used as a calling channel and then any one (and only one) of the channels 3 - 8 is used as a "werks kanaal", or talk channel. In this case we do activate scanning on Ch 2 and the specific talk channel only, i.e. in our area it would be channels 2 & 4 only. We do not scan the other channels at all.

Can't see Nico's pics, something wrong, but I have mounted my radio exactly the same. Made a little aluminium plate and fixed it behind the mirror using the mirror's fix holes. I've got a canopy on, so the rearview mirror does not get used and all i've done is drapped the mic around the mirror.

Will take some pics tonite.

Question - where is the best place to mount the aerial. I was thinking on the left hand side front fender close to the windscreen.

No!! Either on the roof, or on the rear (B or C) pillar, as high as feasible. Hope you can now see Henk's pic, that is how it ashould be done.

Thanx F_D

I see a lot of guys mount the arial on the front bullbar, is this not similar to mounting it onto the front fender.

I don't particually want to drill into my C pillar and feel that a fender is easier to replace / repair.

What would the issues be in fitting the arial to the fender compared to the C pillar / roof / bullbar??

Hi Lane, without any issues / comprimise on reception / coverage distance / etc???

If I look at it one would loose about 1/2m in height compared to a C pillar mount and less than 1m on a roof mount.

Would that make a BIG difference on the reception?

Mounting the antenna anywhere lower than roof height is a compromise. The bullbar is a convenient place to mount the antenna, but transmission will be somewhat directional. Ditto the fender mount. But if you are not worried about long-distance communications and only feel the need for convoy communications, it is acceptable.

Lane, if you have both the current ORRA frequencies programmed into your radio, you need to fit a quarter-wave antenna.
