Eric seems to be the authority on this. He says check when last the cam belt was replaced and check the CV boots. Otherwise in general you want to check the under carriage to see if it has been on gravel roads often. Service history is important to see what has been done and where it has been serviced.

Virtually everyone sings the praise of the 'die hard' engine, especially the 3.4l. With high mileage the diesels are not favoured.

On the models you get a diesel, being the 3.0l KZTE motor and then on the petrol ones, the 3.4 and the 4.0l. The other variation is type of transmission.

I also looking. Many believe that mileage is just when the engine has run in and can do 500 000 kms and more if serviced properly. I think a good price for that model and mileage. Some peekchas please. What extras does it have?

Actually James C is the real authority. But you won't go wormg the Prado 90, still by far the best-looking Prado out and more comfortable than a Merc. Not quite as economical as a Merc however :)

The 3.4 V6 engine is legendary...they use these vehicles in the middle east as taxis and a friend of mine says he saw several that had done over
1 000 000km, crossing the desert back and forth. In countries like Zambia, for example, the Prado 90's are a dime a dozen.

You cannot go wrong and 265 000 is nothing. Cam belt should be done on 300 000. Not a expensive service - in the region of R4k does it all.

Not great on fuel consumption but I suspect you are buying for other reasons.

You get the VX and GX models. My wife drives a 2000 3.4 Petrol GX.

VX - luxury - leather seats, and various other stuff
GX - basic - cloth seats, etc.

The later models, from around 2000 includes diff lock

Spot on Jaco. Which is what I have - VX with all the bells and whistles. Diff locks, climate control throughout, leather seats throughout. Power button - which lets the ato box work harder and only changes gears at about 5500rpm. 2nd start if you so choose etc.

The power button is fun. That motor comes alive over 4000rpm's

Late 1998, AFAIK, PraDog has the LSD, but some of them had no rear diff assistance at all. Difficult to determine which are LSD and which are standard diffs.
