Transmission fluid
Ok here is the information.
2003 Toyota Prado (3.0 1KD-FTV) with 98,000 KM on the odometer. 4 speed automatic. Gets driven once a week if it's lucky.
How often should the transmission fluid be change?
Today decided to check automatic transmission fluid with the engine running but didn't drive it more than a 100 meters to a flat area. So it was a cold transmission -the fluid is near the low indicator on the dipstick.

Re: How bad is it?
You obviously have a leak on the autobox and the smell could have been some ATF getting onto the exhaust or close enough to the radiant heat.
Overfill it just a tad and take some with you for the trip (depending on how badly it's leaking a 5lit should do it), check it every now and so often along the way and you should get there OK.
Good luck!

Re: How bad is it?
Thanks a bunch. I think today I will do just that. Will see where I can find fluid here as we live remotely.
Going to call the mechanic in Rawalpindi soon to see what he says also.
Thank again.

Re: How bad is it?
Decided to get the mechanic to come up as we didnt want to buy fluid here locally.
He came and found that there was a small leak from the ATF chamber. Removed the chamber. Had the ATF filter cleaned and then put back on sealed with silicon. Apparently that is a routine thing which should be done regularly. Filled it up with ATF.
Levels is back up to normal and no new leaks can be seen after driving it.
I think all is ok
Thanks for everybody's help.

Re: Transmission fluid
Do you replace the transmission oil at some stage or just keep topping up?

Re: How bad is it?
It's not a regular service item .... not necessary to replace unless contaminated. For peace of mind you can change it every 50,000 km. If you have to top up you have a leak somewhere ..... try find where and have it sorted (probably a shaft seal).farazharoon wrote:Good news!
