Prado advies

Post by Riaan14 »

Hi there!

I own a 2001 Prado 3.4 with 241 000 km on the odo. There is a Toyota Service History for the vehicle up to 209 000km. I had the cambelt replaced and a major service done. My question is when should one look at wheelbearings? My mechanic says don't bother until they start making a noise. I have heard an opinion that the bearings should last the lifetime of the vehicle.

Your advice, please?

Don't fix what's not broken.

My 'lux is still running the original bearings - 377682kms later!

I agree, don't fix if not broken. Unless you are planning to go on a trip through Africa then I will rather replace them at home before I leave, but just for normal use, they can still go another 100,000km or so.

I spoke to Ralph at Toyo Center. According to him, the 3.4 Prado does not have a cam belt. I asked him to replace the cambelt of my wife's Prado. The Prado is a 2000/2001, with 146 000 km. Awesome vehicles

Hmmmm.... not what I was led to believe. PraDog has a sticker on the engine bay stating "Cambelt changed at xxxx kms". The 4-litre V6 I believe has a chain, not a belt.

PraDog is currently at TSA getting new sideshafts - courtesy of TSA!

3.4 V6 has a belt and must be replaced. 4.0 V6 has a chain and needs no replacing unless you hear it

I think that wheelbearing replacement depends on the weight the vehicle has had to carry over it's life time. I will agree that if it aint broken then don't fix it. Just remember that, far off the beaten track, you go nowhere should the wheelbearing collapse. Carry a spare for the front as well as the rear in your spares box. You will be fore ever grateful the day that you experience a failure.

In my experience this is not the case - my truck ALWAYS has a load on; I'm a plumber by trade and this is my daily driver and the bearings is still 100% at 377 758km!

95series Prado and KZ-te shape Hilux uses same wheelbearing as the Dyna 4-093 so you'll have too overload it to get to the Dyna's payload never had any failures on them
