Taillight.Is this legal
I am looking after a friends Prado Colorado. It is a UK spec.He brought it into the country and is now registered in SA.
It has the KZ motor and is actually quit nice.Only have the 2 doors.
Me and Pieter was fiddling with the fog lights yesterday and I noticed the left tail lamp for the headlights is not working.
Today I took it out to replace bulb.I then saw there is not any bulbs or wiring for the headlight tail lamp. There is not even an opening to insert a bulb
My guess is that in the UK you just need one tail lamp when the head lights is on.
Is this legal in SA or do you have to have 2 tail lights?
Must say I found this quite strange from Toyota. The car is the GX spec that is the cheaper model, but still

If it is registered in SA, it will have passed the roadworthy. so that would make it legal.
Our SA vehicles must have both lights working.

My dads prado had 1 reverse light. There was a lense for otherside but also no fittings etc. When we did roadworthy I remember the guy was very annoyed about it and we had to strip it to prove it had only 1. It made roadworthy.

95 series Prado's have only one reverse light and one rear fog lamp the tail lamp and indicators are in the bumper came out like that so is legal. Have openend the holes in the top lenses and fitted light fittings for tail and stop lamps on the body much more visible

What I meant was the tail lamps. The one that come on when the headlights are on.The Prado had a set in the bumper and then have the top lenses on the side which is a lot more visible than the bumper cluster. Will take a pic tonight

Like Jan said
I checked the lights in daylight and did not really saw the ones in the bumper. The fog light was one so I presumed only one tail light was working. So you have this nice big visible cluster with no bulbs.I see a mod in the future
Standard with headlights on Reverse light on Fog light on

Re: Taillight.Is this legal
That's just crazy! Really, how much wopuld it add to the production cost of the vehicle to just connect a second reverse light and a second fog light .... particularly in relation to the overall cost of a vehicle that is supposed to be more on the luxury side of the scale.
Additionally, I would have thought it better to have the brake lights higher and the fog lights lower .... fog is less dense closer to the ground which is why front fog lamps are always placed low down or why one uses dips rather than brights when travelling in foggy conditions. The higher brake lights would give more visibily and practicality to what is an infinitely more regular function .... what if you're pulling a trailer - you'd be depending on the trailer lights which can often be problematic more many reasons, not least of which is if there's a poor connection at the hitch socket.
I think Toyota dropped the ball here.

No Andy you are wrong... That is Toyota watching the "bottom line" at the expense of the safety of their customers.... Several millions of Japanese Yens were saved in this way..Mud Dog wrote:I think Toyota dropped the ball here.

Re: Taillight.Is this legal
Is it like my Cruiser?
Its "molded shut", if you want to call it that. Someone told me its got to do with SA law, you have to be able to see the lights on both sides on a 45 degree angle, so the issue is the spare wheel. :?

Re: Taillight.Is this legal
