Hilux 2.4 and 2.2

Post by Johann Prinsloo »

Hi there everyone. I joined 2day and I love this Forum.

I have been wanting to buy a hilux 4x4 d/c 2.2/2.4l for quite some time now..(anything betw '88 & '96)
I will be using this as my transport vehicle for the next 2 years and then add a car to my collection. (I am selling my current car) I spearfish in Mozambique alot so that is my motivation!

During the last few months I came across quite a few options. (some to expensive, some too used up etc. etc.) I only discovered this site recently, but could not really use the ones for sale on this site, cause I am in Gauteng and the ones I want are in East London for instance.
Luckilly I have found 2 that I am happy with and now I want to know which one to buy.

1. I found a 1990 2.2 4x4 D/C (white). 255 000km. R48 500, I offered slightly less and it was accepted.
This vehicle has a canopy, long range tank, P/S, towbar, gearlock and was generally very well looked after. (had apaint job though) Interior looks good and chasis, transfer case, diffs etc looks good. I also test drove it and thoroughly tested the 4x4 on some down/up hills and in circles in both directions.
The only problem is the owner; He has been keeping me on a line for more than 2 weeks. There seems to be a problem with the engine no. not corresponding with the papers.. Also tough to get info out of him, such as, why there is a problem, who was the previous owner, etc.
If i buy this one i can spend some money on it (tires, engine repair etc.)

2. A 1996 2.4 4x4 D/C (green) R65 000. 235 000km. This is a bit steep for my budget but it looks pretty good so I can consider it. It has, bull bar, roll bar, long range tank, towbar, 2 spare wheels, Brospeed conv, a/c, p/s, alarm, gearlock, central lock, anti hi-jack and cd player.
The owner had it through the aa test and says it has been serviced very often.
It will just be very thirsty?

Which one is the better option?
Can i change the engine of the 2.4 at a later stage for a 2.2 or diesel?
Which one is more reliable and cheaper to keep running?

Any advice appreciated

Hello Johann. Welcome to the forum. As far as your dilemma goes, if you have R65K go for the green Hilux. It just seems to be a better bet. The other one sounds a bit dicey to me.

I can't say about the fuel consumption but I think they are more or less the same.

Hi Johan, and welcome to the forum!

I would go with what Niel & Kaspaas say, but wouldn't worry about doing an engine swap at this stage. You could always reconsider that later, but the inlet manifolds on the 2.2 and 2.4 are on opposite sides of the vehicle. Both engines are equally good, while some people prefer the diesel 2.8 engine, but that is personal choice.

Eric, I have driven a 2.8 SFA (test drive on road) but was not impressed, it has no grunt and is very slow (to be expected off road is a different matter - there it will shine) I will stick to a petrol. Then my comment is a bias if you are use to drive a KZ. What is the history of the 2.4 Diesel?

I used to drive a 2.8 diesel Lux while I lived in Aus, and that thing pulls like a tractor off-road. The torque is phenominal. But yes, a dog on the road, but on de udder hand darren, the speed limit over there is 110km/h and are quite strictly enforced, so I was guaranteed not to get any speed fines...

I don't get many fines with a 2.2 petrol engine either!

Ok Johann, back to your original question ...

I think you have the answer in front of you.

Kaspas, Niel, FD, & now Papa Joe concur - 2.4 !!!
Not because she is any better than the 2,2 or the 2.8D. (I have had all 3. They are all awesome.)
Just considering the engine # issue, model age & km.

2.2P - Unbreakable
2.8D - Unbreakable (I had the Turbo, hence went thru' 2 x heads & on my LC Prado KZTE, 1 x head).
2.4P - Unbreakable

Personally, I have JUST gone back to petrol. (Gone thru' 3 x heads, this is enough for one life time.)

Green Hilux 2.4 Petrol - Go, go, go !

PS: They are ALL thirsty. (Want economy get a Corsa Lite.)

Good luck !

Cheers,

Hi Johan;

Jy kan nie 'n fout maak met jou keuse nie. Ek het 'n 1990 DC wat 'n 2.2 engin gehad het. Toe ek hom koop was daar 'n 2.4 in. Offroad is hierdie bakkie " onstopbaar".

Jy gaan nou petrol gebruik
