My Replacement Hilux
After 35 days since the accident, the insurance company payed out. So I went shopping.
Besides the waiting (which I felt, was forever!), we did not have any hassles with the insurance company.
I decided to get a low mileage, 3.0 Raider, which was delivered yesterday afternoon.
Now I need to install all the goodies I took off my old bakkie.
Starting with the dual battery, 2-way radios, bash plates, and when they arrive from Stofpad4x4, my rocksliders (currently on order).
More pics to follow... as the mods happen...

Thanks everyone!
That bit of plastic looks like a little bump will remove it - I just don't have the 10k lying around right now for a "New ARB Adventure Bar for Hilux Vigo"
I'll have to make a plan with the front bumper before venturing too far out the driveway!ThysdJ wrote:Congratulations Roy we'll see you guys more often now right?

Shot Roy!
When you re-install the two-way radio antenna, please ensure that you do not coil the excess antenna wire up in a coil. Either lay it hap-hazardly or cut it shorter, leaving sufficient slack cable.
And remember, no joints allowed in it!

Thanks Eric.
There is no slack. I have to feed the cable the shortest route under the carpet.
I used to have a "splitter" which worked off 1 aerial for the two radios, but that never worked (too many joins I guess...), so it's a direct connection - no joins!
Just 2 FAT holes in the C-pillar, which I still need to do... eish!!

Roy... a "splitter"? The transmitter should go straight to the correct antenna - the length of the antenna whip is cut for a specific frequency. Anything else can damage the radio - big time!I used to have a "splitter" which worked off 1 aerial for the two radios, but that never worked (too many joins I guess...), so it's a direct connection - no joins!

Re: My Replacement Hilux
Roy, those "Co-Axial Switches" were popular in the days of HF SSB radio, typified by many trucks that used to be on the road with two long antennas fitted to the cab, one on each side. But the HF radios were low-frequency (HF), typically 3 or 4 MHz and then 7MHz. They used to switch the HF rig between the two antennas because although HF was designed for long range communications (CT to Polokwane, with ease), it was very susceptible to time of day transmissions, hence they often had two or more frequencies to provide the long-range communication.
Nowadays we have Trunked Radio, which operates on a cellular basis similar to cell phone operation through a network of automatic radio repeater stations all interlinked.

Thanks for the info, Eric. Most interesting.
Well, if there are any HF radio users out there, with two antennas, and would like a switch, I have one in the garage...

Re: My Replacement Hilux
So as not to hijack Stef's thread on the 350 Ah batteries, I'm replying to Marks' comment here:
The right hand side is up close to the body, and the left hand side has the brake pipe.
I had to move the pipe to the left, just to get this battery to fit!
So how do you move the brake pipe to get the 105Ah battery to fit? Bend it??
Here's a pic of the 95Ah dual battery installed in my engine bay:OOOOMS wrote:Nee man Roy, hy pas wel as jy so bietjie plan maak. Ek het een in die 3.0 D4D Tuna ingesitRoyco wrote:Dit sal nie in die engine bay pas nie!
I only managed to get a 95Ah to fit... even my 105Ah's need to stay in the load bin in a battery box.
The engine bay in the 3.0l is "prop vol"

Re: My Replacement Hilux
I added Camil shocks to the front of the Hilux.
What a difference it has made!! I used to hit every pebble on the road, the middle-mannetjie was always LOWER after I'd been on a trial.... NOT ANY MORE!!
Before the Camils, the measurement from centre of the wheel, to the wheel arch was 45cm.
Then after adding the Camils, I measured 52cm.
I will take more pics later...

Looking good! I had to make a second box for the big battery with an edge that goes under the fender. It locates using the fender bolts at the top and feet at the bottom to spread the load. Initially I just had a flat plate and it started cracking with the dirt roads. Since then no problem. I will post a pic later.

Re: My Replacement Hilux
Mount it behind the rear seat. Do the mod that allows you to fold seat down there is so much space there. I take it you are running power to the canopy with the second battery? Just T off and feed into cab. I mounted my inverter inside the vehicle under the glove box which also runs off the second battery. The 105 ah battery is big. with the bracket I made I had to move the fuel filter forward as well. Watch the wiring loom at the base of the battery it can run through if not moved and secured properly. Sounds like you're having fun with that new van

So I have to be careful what I write about it. It's NOT an ARB, and I need to make some major adjustments to make it look nice!! Second time around, I would definitely have opted for the ARB!!

Re: My Replacement Hilux
Roy are the Camils only at the front? And how is the ride so far? I must say I'm impressed with the new height considering its only shox you changed.

Re: My Replacement Hilux
Yes, only the front. Coils and shocks.
I have only done 500km on them. That only being short distances.
I've done two trails and must say the ground clearance is more than enough for me!
I need to go back after 1000km so they can re-adjust the height. Apparently they need to settle.
That's another reason why I opted for them. If I ever add a winch, and need the height adjusted, I don't need to change the shocks etc.

Re: My Replacement Hilux
Baie dankie Roy, ek het dit self gedoen. Die Spray se naam is "Rust-oleum" Hammered Finish. Wat cool is, is dat y het geen Primer nodig het nie. Een blik kos R89-00 by Builders Wearhouse. Ek het al 4 rims gedoen met een blik. Die crome studs het ek by TSW gekoop. Ek het ook vir my 'n winch opgesit.

Re: My Replacement Hilux
I added some recovery hooks, back and front:
Now I don't need to worry about flying shackles...

Also to show the mudflaps mod:
This is a picture taken of a friends Hilux just to show the original length:
These are my mudflaps, after I trimmed them. They haven't fallen off since
