Tell us a bit more about your Hilux (or other 4x4) and show off with some pictures.

A dream, finally come reality. (SFA content)

Post by KAKA »

Howsit gents?
My name is Hamza and I come from Lichtenburg.
I always had a desire to own a 4x4 and not just any 4x4 but a old school Toyota 4x4, cruiser, hilux etc.
Being a avid fisherman and hunter I needed something that would suit my needs. Something tough, something reliable, something amazing.
It was all just a thought in my mind till the day I seen my 95 Hilux 4x4 D/C at a car wash.
It was the one I wanted, the one I had to have. Factory stock and with a little character ( rust etc hehe )
I walked up to the owner and two days later it was mine.
The first time I seen it

Some random pics in the 5 months that own him.

That would be everyone's problem with those old busses, but learn to live with it .... that's a most awesome motor for off road purposes .... bullet proof, reliable, easy to fix IF anything goes wrong and plenty low rev grunt for crawling (You can do almost any obstacle in 2nd L4). Tweaking / servicing the carb and monitoring your driving style can get you some very decent consumption figures. ;-)

Out of interest, as I don't know anyone else who owns a SFA, what mileage do you get on the standard tank?

All pre 1994 were 4Y motors. Not sure of the tank size now but you should be able to get 9 - 10 km/lit on the open road without a heavy load if all is set up well. ;-)

Easy.. get a loooong downhill, and a tow-strap for uphills... Drive close behind your friend with a V6 Vigo and hook on when he's not looking... It will also ensure that you can go faster than 120km/h in your 4Y...

Lexus V8 can sort many things.. it will also relieve the itch in your backside very quickly    it will most definitely make your Hilux go faster than 120km/h.. but it wont improve your fuel consumption much..

When I got my 2.2 Dc SFA two months ago, I got 4.5km/l and about max of 110km/h. Whent for a decent dyno and overhauled the carb. Now I can say with a smile that I'm getting 7.85km/l and it shunts eazy goes to 140km/h.Kilowats went from 60.2kw to 74.4kw.
Install a decent radio, because time is of no essence in a Hilux 4x4 2.2(4y) dcab.

welcome and enjoy

Yes!!
You see, progress!
A dyno to be done with a good tune.
Mines cruises at +-115kph on a flat track, so sounds like its need of a tune.
Who do you gentlemen suggest for that?
Preferably Klerksdorp or potch or Lichtenburg itself.

The truck originally had Bridgestone dueler H/Ts on but I found them a bit loose off road. I put a set of GT Radial A/Ts on, got them at a steal, it makes a world difference.

The best I have ever gotten is 7.8km/l no load and it was on an open road....
Mine did it with ease and from time to time I got even better than that ..... believe it or not on one open road leg I got close to 11 km/lit, admittedly I had the wind behind me, no load and I wasn't pushing it. All it had done to it was a Brospeed conversion, the carb I had set up myself, timing was set at almost 12° BTDC and it had 30" Cooper Discoverer tyres. The motor had only done about 210 000 k's when the van went AWOL, but a few years before that it had overheated badly which had resulted in a clatter on cold start until it warmed up ... it wasn't hydraulic lifters and a compression test showed that it wasn't up to par ... long story short was that the piston skirts had deformed with the excessive heat so we replaced pistons / rings and fitted a complete new head. After that it pulled noticeably better and of course the fuel consumption improved, giving the above figures.

From first hand experience I can say that it's possible, otherwise I probably wouldn't have believed it myself. ;-)

Welcome Hamza. Had the same fuel speed and speed issue with the 4y carby. Converted to 4y efi, this helped a bit but sooner or later you get tired of that as well. And then you come up with this...

Welcome! I had a '95 just like yours, thing was a beauty! So much power in certain areas. Unfortunately i lost my '95 in an accident. 4X4'ing accident by the way, nothing to serious. Took a slope incorrectly and rolled the car. After it was fixed up, it never quite ran the same, just like all cars. So i sold it for R80 000 and bought a new car, no rolling in style.
