New Kid on the Site

Post by weblife »

Hi Guys
This is my first visit to the site and I have just registered.

I own a 1998 Toyota Hilux 3.0D DC 4x4, or as we know it here by it's name at the farm, Donkey. It is without a doubt the slowest bakkie I have ever owned. It's 'cruising' speed is 110kph on the highway and its max is about 125 with 135 seen on loooong downhills (and then the motor is close to overrevving). She gives 6k/l no matter where or how you drive. I call it 'her' because it reminds me of an old woman who just won't die.

I swapped a 2000 LC 100 VX diesel for the bakkie about 5 years ago. She had been living a very hard life in Zambia as a missionaries vehicle and was just not up to the frequent long trips back to SA with the missionary and his family. When I got her, her motor had just been redone and that only lasted for a few months before it died.
I redid the motor and that lasted for another few months until she broke again. This time I redid it again, along with the transfer case, a new suspension kit all round and a new wheel hub assembly.

When this motor died after a long trip to Zim and back, I fitted a 2nd hand Jap engine, and so far, it's been about 3 years and all is well. So all in all, I spent about R150 000 in maintenance over 2 years for a car worth only R55 000. Makes sense...

She now works on a farm near Nelspruit carrying wood and sand and people and whatever else you can fit on or in her. Being off road and in 4x4 mode is actually the best place for her as she doesn't need speed to show off how good she is.
Currently, Donkey needs a new starter, attention to the front suspension and brakes, but she will have to wait because I have a Prado that needs attention more urgently. Luckily on a farm, you can get away with almost no brakes and no starter.

Donkey is the kind of vehicle that grows on you. Tough and dependable (as long as you pay attention to maintenance), she has a character of her own. I will never get rid of her. I still fantasize about kitting her out with an Alucab bakkie bin and hitting the road to London via Cairo, slowly. Very slowly.
