Hi forum i am glad to have found you

Post by Godfather »

Hi forum and Scottty

I am surrounded by Landrover freaks and it good to see a hilux forum out there.
Some background info
I ran into Scotty at the roadworthy centre as he was registering his new toy or should a say asset for his Africa trip. While he was reg. his hilux I was reg. a landrover (my boss has got a collection) which I can’t seem to get though roadworthy mmmmmm.......... what can I say.

I have been looking for a 4x4 for a while because I wanted to do a strip through Botswana and Namibia.
Landrover well my boss has his own workshop for 3 of them so I thought not a good idea.

I then was looking at the hilux but did not want to spend more then 110K and I also had to use it for city driving.
I found a RSX hilux 2.7i mod 2000, 140000Km and I bought it the next day.

I am really enjoying it but I have not taken it off road as yet. I know the SFA is better for off road but I had to sacrifice something for comfort.
The only mods that I have made are a free flow exhaust, a chip with a dyno tune.
I am not looking for a racing car but it helped with the fuel consumption 12L/100Km city.

I need some help with a few things.

I am in Cape Town and I need a place where I can do some kitting out for a trip I am doing end Nov. (Roof tent, Roof rack etc) any idea?

Is there somebody that can tell me more about my car?
Things to look out for, maybe changes I should make?
One big problem I have got is shuddering in the steering wheel when i break.
I have changed front breaks disc and pads, done wheel alignment and balancing.
I have got Gyear 255/70R15 Wranglers which might be causing the problem????
Any ideas before I change my tyres?

I look forward to being part of this forum.

Regards

Hi Godfather, welcome to our Forum!

You made a good choice and the IFS Hilux is still a very capable machine, as others here will confirm.

Not knowing anything about Cape Town (other than they have a little hill there), I can't advise you on where to go to spruce your Hilux up, but we do have plenty of Cape Tonians on board here who will surely jump in here with their advice.

Hi Godfather, welcome to the forum.

If the shudder is only when braking then it is not balancing or the tyres. You already replaced the disc pads, but it can be the discs themselves or even the caliper bushes/rubbers.

Regarding the roof rack, etc. Send Niel a PM (personal Message) his details are at:

He mentioned to me the other day that one of the guys at work might be selling his aluminium roof rack soon. Perhaps you can get a bargain there.

Hi Godfather

Welcome to the forum and good to have you here. Yes, Landrover say no more.

Where did you have it chipped? The consumption figures are not bad at all.

On the kitting issue I can only say shop around because it will save you some money.

I will send you a PM with some places I can recommend.

Pieter Pretorius (site admin) has a 1999, 2.7 DC, 4X4, he can assist but the most guys on the forum has SFA’s. Family Dog also drives a 2.7 and they are nice guys that can and will help. There are others as well, just that these two comes to mind now.

The shudder when breaking might come from the disc pads/rear drums that might require skimming. I will check that out before looking at the tyres.

My opinion only

Where specifically in CT are you from?

Hi Godfather

Welcome. Mine did the same and it seemed to be the linkage between the steering and the tyre rod (I think) which was worn.

Lets us know what it turned out to be

Cheers

Hi Godfather

Welcome to the forum. As far as the shudder is conserned I would have all the ball joints and steering linkage checked as you say you have had the pads and discs done also check that you dont have a buckled rim and that by some very slim misfortune that the stub axil or wheel bearing is not damaged in front.

Morning Godfather

I would start by having the new discs and pads checked. It is not common but every once in a while you do get discs that are warped from new. Also if you hadn't let the pads bed in properly from new you may have damaged them too and that could cause the shudder. My philosophy is to start with smallest thing first (a fuse generally) and work your way up, that way you might save yourself alot of money.

Then I agree with all other statements, start looking at the steering joints and make sure all tired rod and ball joints are ok.

Hey Godfather! :D

Great you made it onto the forum! I've been so busy playing with our new "asset" that I havn't been on the forum much. The highlight was getting up to 122kph on the N2 whilst driving to Winelands4x4 on Saturday. (Measured the 'true' speed with a Garmin 60Csx, the speedo told us we were doing 130kph).

Some friends and I are planning a number of daytrips around Cape Town to play during the next couple of weeks (they all drive Toyota's so you'll fit right in) - I'll give you a shout if you want to come along.

You've got a great Toyota - post a pic when you get the chance.

Cheers
