My Van started to jerk before servicing. After i replaced all the filters, plugs and points, coil, condensor, fuel pump, distributor cab, rotor, ignition timing, serviced the distributor and carburator i cant get my 4x4 started, what can it be. I lost compression on nr 6 then losing the exhuast valve, and then got compression again, but even so i still can not get my truck started. My concern is that there is not enough suction on the carburator, where must i start looking for the problem please, can anyone give me some possibilities to look at.

Welcome Hugo!
Phew, you did a lot of things at one time so the fault could be anywhere. Carb - not sure what all you did to service it, but the gasket / seal to the manifold must not leak / suck air, also make sure that all vacuum lines are good and connected to where they should be. If you changed the needle and seat, you have to adjust the float level. Auto or manual choke? Working? If electric auto choke, is the solenoid wire connected?
Is the new fuel pump working? Fuel filling the float chamber? Didn't get the return line mixed up with the line to the carb?
Shouldn't be a reason not to start unless wildly out of spec, but did you set the gap on the new plugs?
Coil lead good, not broken or not making proper connection (not pushed fully home)?
Bougi cords correctly routed in firing order? Rotor facing no.1 cylinder cord when at TDC on ignition stroke? Not 180° out? Did you set the point gap correctly?
Perhaps retrace your steps and check it all as you go.

My guess is that the distributor might be 180° out of phase. Very easy to do that, caught me out once as well. Assuming, of course, that you removed it for servicing.

The points-gap should be 0.4mm and not 0.63 like the book says, unless it's a very old Fomoco distributor, that's usually the problem

I had one of these motors in my first Hilux.Hoppy wrote:The points-gap should be 0.4mm and not 0.63 like the book says, unless it's a very old Fomoco distributor, that's usually the problem
The first thing I did was have the distributor reconditioned and converted to Electronics.. Cost about R1500 if I remember correct.

Make sure the condenser and point's wires doesn't short where they connect to each other in the distributor. Had that problem once after servicing mine.

Thank you to all concerened. Here is what i have done so far.Changed points and condensor.changed coil +coil lead.Replaced rotor+distibuter cap.Replaced elect feul pump'.Checked fibre gear through petrol pump hole(seems fine).Took distrubuter out and found one spring loose and repaired it.Still no joy,did a compression test with my finger and found no 6 piston have no comp, then i loosened the exhaust valve a bit and got comp, still no joy it still backfires through carb.i then chocked it by hand but it does not suck a lot.sparkplugs on piston 3+6 is wet with fuel but others are dry.points gap set to 0,45mm on bosch dist ,plug gap at 0,62mm.i also made the points gap smaller and larger with no joy.i set the timing at tdc then 4 deg then 6 and so on up to 14 deg,but still no joy,i also turned timing a 180 deg out but still no joy.I will keep you all updated, thanks again for all concirned help

Goodday to all.I have removed the timing cover and fiber gear is ok and it is not loose on the metal part. The timing marks are allinged when no 1 piston is at TDC.I then removed the right hand side head to see why i lost comp on no 6 piston but everything is ok.I noticed while stripping that the inlet manifold bolts were not very tightly bolted down, could this also cause backfiring through the carburator.thank you very much to all.

Just wondering .... I'm assuming that you didn't interfere with the valve timing (cam gear position) .....

Thank you to both dogs. The only thing that i found was that the inlet manifold bolts was not tightened properly(loose),could this cause backfiring through the carburator, the timing marks on the photo is like i found it lighned up with no 1 piston at TDC so the valve timing is ok,with the inlet manifold loose i would not have enough suction on the carburator .thus explaining why only no3 and 6 plugs were wet with feul and all the other plugs dry.what is the cold valve clearances and what is the torque settings for the inlet manifold and for the heads please. How do i change the fan idler bearing in the timing cover mine is noisy

I also have the same engine in my Sheep
When I first bought it I had a similar problem where it would idle perfectly
but as soon as you increase the revs the power would drop, it would misfire, backfire and even get flames thrown from the exhaust
I replaced dizzys, point and condencer and serviced the carb, but nothing would change
After a while we noticed that playing around with the points gap made it slightly better but never got it right
Then I decided to change the points for the "elecronics" in this page
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8302&p=90421&hilit= ... ord#p90421" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This sorted my problem completely
Hope this helps

Hi Scott it,s a electric pump.I replaced it today and it,s pumping well now,but it is still not starting.I get a small spark from the coil(2nd coil)I supplyed 12v directly to the coil to see if it isnt a supply problem but its still a small spark, you have to hold the coil wire 1mm from the earth to get a spark, both coils do the same.can both new coils be defective

Hugo get away with that points, condensor, coil etc and switch over to electronic dizzy.Surely that will be the end of your problems.

Hi to all,i think that i found the recent problem, when i fitted a new electric feul pump i made the mistake of drawing power for the feul pump from the pos side of the coil, thus increasing the current through the points, causing the points to burn very quickly and not thinking it can be the points again and searching else where, thanks for all your inputs
