Replaced my front flexible brake lines yesterday with new ones which are 50mm longer. After looking at some pics of a cross axle at a recent outing I saw that they were at their limit. Anyway, they were 18 years old, so time to go. Also took the time to make a heat shield out of 1.5mm aluminium plate (old shelf from a fridge) to protect them from the exhaust manifold heat.

Justin, I payed R 110 ea from Ferrobrake (CBS). Mechanic at work organised them for me.

I had Powerflow make me a new set of manifold downpipes for the V6 today as the old downpipe on the passenger side used to touch the chassis when running downhill under compression.

They did a great job. Now I have a proper two into one connector, and a flange joint installed so I can remove them if I have to remove the gearbox.

Decided to get a new engine spec plate made, long overdue, as its been 3 years since I did the conversion.

Etched in stainless steel plate.

Came out quite well if I do say so myself

With the axle move done, I was bored today

So I decided to clean up the home made underbelly guard which protects the bottom of the radiator/power steering pipes and pulleys. I removed it to fit the adjustable torque rod.

I originally made it out of aluminium chequer plate from an old BOB autoteller machines floor.
Engine and pulley gaurd alu plate.JPG
Somehow the FNB blue colour never really matched the rest of the vehicle
So I gave it a clean and resprayed it. Now it looks much better.

I have been meaning to do a few minor jobs on the Lux, but the axle move has kept me busy, so today I finally got around to tackling them :)

First off was to fix the weak rear braking. I have read about modifying the LSPV rod height on the Lux to fix this problem. I did my OME suspension about 3 years ago, but never really got around to compensating for the increased rear suspension height. My Lux's rear lifted about 50mm after the new springs were fitted.

I used my spare bits I had and cut the threaded section off the bit that fits to the axle, and then welded on a new longer threaded section I had made.
Rear brake LSVP rod height modification.JPG
Rear brake LSVP rod height modification.JPG (17.53 KiB) Viewed 14733 times
I then fitted the new part and adjusted the mounting point of the LSPV rod about 50mm higher.
New longer LSVP axle rod fitted.JPG
After two test drives and a bit of adjustment, the rear brakes are now better, and the Lux brakes a bit better overall. Not perfect, but an improvement.

With the brake mod done, I then set about cutting some aluminium sheet and made up a heat shield for the drivers side exhaust manifold downpipe. This area gets quite hot, so this should protect all the wire, fuel lines and speedo cable.

I used the existing threaded holes in the chassis to fasten the heatshield, and placed two chassis washers behind it to space it slightly away from the chassis rail.
Manifold downpipe heatshield driver side 2.JPG
Manifold downpipe heatshield driver side 1.JPG
With that done, I also made up a heat shield to reduce the amount of heat on the spare tyre. The 265/75R15 tyre I use as a spare pretty much takes up all the space and is very close to the exhaust. I cut some slots in the aluminium and then bent them slighlty inwards to create an offset so the shiel stood away from the mounting points. I then fastened it with to hose clamps.

Works like a charm :D

8 ) .. ... And no rattles or resonance from these plates throughout the rev range? That exhaust is very close to the tyre ... good idea!

If it does resonate, often you can overcome this by putting a crease along the edge of the plate, or a slight fold, maybe even just top and bottom (stiffens the plate - less flexible). Hope you don't have any hassles!

Had a good play in the sand and on the back tracks behind Summerstrand in PE this afternoon after the Recovery demonstration put on by EC Offroad Adventures.

This gave me a good chance to test the new setup on the Lux, and the performance of the 33's.

My Lux performed faultlessly, not even a resonation from all the heat shields

The 33 MT's definitely performed well on the sand. I had a chance to check a bit of the wheel articulation, and got no rubbing yet. So this looks positive.

All in all, a great afternoon.

On the continuing efforts to reduce noise, I bought some 10mm thick SPX33 foam rubber from Sondor today, and lined the bonnet. I also bought some plastic clips to fit into the factory holes in the bonnet to secure the lining without having to use glue.

The SPX can take 120 Deg C, so lets see how long it lasts without shrinking
