HI ALL
Hi I am Tertius (a newbie) and I live in Oudtshoorn (South Africa).
I just bought myself an old 1990 Hilux 2.4D double cab 4x4 as I always wanted one. Vehicle is not in perfect condition but in time I would like to transform it into something to be proud of
Any advice from more experienced owners will be highly appreciated.
Kind regards
Tertius

Re: HI ALL
Dankie manne.
Sal fotos posit sodra ek kansie kry.
Groete:)

Thanks Parabat.
Comes in really handy!!! Don't laugh but the "directions" on the 4x4 gear lever is gone and I did not have an idea of where to switch it in certain situations. Now I know:)

Re: HI ALL
Thanks Tony.
I had the opportunity yesterday to take it on the open road for the first time. (Went fishing)
Except for the fact that it is VERY slow and the ride was bumpy I drove it with a smile on my face.
I will however need to look at the steering as the vehicle is somewhat hard to keep in the lane. I already replaced the back shocks and will also replace the front ones next week just to make sure. One guy told me that should also look at the tires as he had the same bumpy ride on those same tires but after he replaced it his bakkie drove fine. I currently run on Firestone Destination A/T. Any advise on the steering and bumpy ride will be appreciated. The slowness of Kwagga will be addressed on a much later stage:)
Will upload some pics of Kwagga later.

Re: HI ALL
Have wheel alignment checked. Also check for any play on the tie-rod ends. Unevenly worn tyres can also cause it to pull to a side.
Ride comfort is mostly determined by the front suspension (hence the move from solid axle to IFS - Independent Front Suspension). Solid axle is however more robust with fewer problems (no control arms, idler arms, stabilizer arms).
A softer after-market suspension upgrade helps a lot with ride comfort, (especially "Old Man Emu") besides of course the benefits of better ride height, aproach, break-over and departure angles.) The hardness of the shocks also plays a vital role.

Re: HI ALL
Update !!!! Replaced Kwagga's rear shocks, greased all nipples, all oil levels checked and filled up, Brakes checked, all belts replaced, etc etc etc. Luckily the steering could be adjusted so that's sorted as well.
Come Monday all leaky seals will be replaced, front springs will be re-tensioned and front shocks will also be replaced. There is also other small stuff that will receive attention.
After all this is done I can focus on Kwagga's interior. Slowly but surely I will get there.
Have a great day guys!!

Re: HI ALL
Just a thought on the power issue - have you changed the fuel filter? When I changed mine last year it was in a bad state (probably never changed before I bought it) and I also cleaned out the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor. My power definitely seemed to improve and the reactions to acceleration input improved.

I will have all of this looked at when it goes in on Monday. Will let you know if there is any improvement.

Re: HI ALL
I would be very careful with 're-tensioning'. It's hardly ever successful and that's because it's almost an exact science - most operators out there that do this kind of thing work on a hit + miss basis. It starts by knowing the exact composition of the spring steel that you're working with and these are normally well kept secrets by the original manufacturers. Do some research and you will find that most o9f them will sag back to where they were or worse after 6 months to a year. You wrote:Come Monday all leaky seals will be replaced, front springs will be re-tensioned and .......
Personally I would not use any form of heat process and would just cold press or cold roll them back.
Otherwise speak to Darryl at Mikem Suspensions (also a member here), and you might be pleasantly surprised at the affordability of locally produced after market kits. Their service is also exemplary.

Re: HI ALL
If you don't get enough chance to look into it properly you can always just postpone the spring job. Be up front with the guys and tell them of your concerns and what you've been told. You can also ask them for references that date back a year or two and then follow those up and see what the results have been after a more lengthy period.
