New to world of 4x4 an bakkies. Have already learned a lot from browsing this forum but felt its Time to be part it

I have been searching long and hard for the best all purpose bakkie to buy 2nd hand. Researched Fords, mazda, Isuzu, Mitsu's etc... but Toyota just seems like it will be worth the more hefty price tags. I never had a days issue with my 4AFE so Im hoping the bakkie will be just as good to me.

God wiling in Jan will be purchasing a 2003 kzte D/C. The idea is to have an all purpose bakkie that wont cost an arm and leg. Bakkie will 90% of the time be used on weekends and to cart my wife's stock to market days wherever they are. Also for when we go to places like beaverlac that don't have take 3 million spare tires with lol.

Just make sure any Lux with a 1Kz-te motor has a FULL service history and is low on mileage.

I have spent a small fortune on the Prado that wasn't serviced properly.

I'm now not a diesel fan at all, I'd rather suggest a 2.7i (3rz-fe) for power and reliability.

in Cape town if you buy a KZTE take vehicle to Francois at 4xLux to check ,they are the specialists down there and have a reputation for excellent service

Welcome. The KZ motors are known to be prone to cracking cylinder heads from around 200,000km and the problem can be exacerbated with having been worked hard (prolonged periods of excessive heat).

Buying a 2nd hand KZ, even with full service history, doesn't forewarn you, .... you have no way of knowing how hard it's been driven or how hard it's worked with previous owners.

The next thing is the injectors - these can give hassles with higher mileage vehicles and this is not just with Toyotas. Injectors on diesels are very pricey repair items.

I would definitely look for a 2.7 petrol instead, but if on the other hand you can pick up a KZ cheap enough to work injectors and a head replacement into the equation, it may be a worthy consideration. If the head goes, replace with an AMC head instead of the standard Toyota one - much better option.

I have a KZTE. You can read all the work that I have done on this forum...... somewhere. Two comments on the old man's reply above (sorry uncle Andy )

1) It costed me R13K to replace the cracked head with an AMC version. I must mention that I did the job myself. It was cheaper than replacing injectors on a D4D. 120 000km later (currently on 356 000km) and still running strong.
2) The KZ's injectors can be overhauled. A reputable work shop like Northern Diesel in Pretoria does it for around R2000. This price did not change in the last 8 years.

Funny you should mention those issues... a good friend of mine went to check the bakkie out for me last night and the following came up:

- 198000km
- Code 3 (apparently bakkie tipped on the dunes and the roof bent)
- No service history but the owner says he has it regularly serviced.

Now I don't feel so sure anymore lol .....the bakkie is gorgeous and the guy want s 85k neg. He uses it daily and it falls in my price range but Im not keen anymore.

Do you guys think I can pick up a good 2.7 D/C(2001-2005) facelift for 100k or less? Thats my budget.

Definitely stay away from the KZ, you should find a 2.7 in that price bracket.

Personally, I wouldn't buy anything that"s been used and abused at the dunes. There's plenty of vehicles out there that haven't been further than a gravel road.

You can have my Kz powered Prado for a R100K, sick of the sight of it, regret buying a stinking diesel!

LOL wouldn't mind a Prado but a Hilux enables my wife to cart her containers and fold up table and stuff to her market days without having to drop the kids by their Grandparents first
