We are making plans for Cape Tonians...

Of course, if more Capetonians bought more raffle tickets (Only TWO days left!!), the gods would smile and be very happy and thus be forced to take remedial action sooner rather than later...!

We are gearing up for Kirisun & Kenwood radios (PT3600, PT4200, PT8000, PT8100 and Kenwood TK7100). It would be helpful to know what other radios we should consider?

As long as it is a VHF model, that will be fine! I think the serial number starts with a "D" for VHF, can't remember. "C" depicts a midband radio, which will not be suitable.

Hi Edge,

Currently, you can still use the radios as depicted in the channel table above. Best is to leave your radio now on Channel 1, which can now be considered the 'calling channel' and is the same frequency and tone as the previous so-called 'Hilux' channel.

It is important to know that the only reason we called it the Hilux channel was because of the choice of tones that are used. There are some 38 tones that could have been used and thankfully ORRA selected the ones that we have always used. So yes, eventually we will work out some sort of plan to reprogram all the radios but at least they will still all work. Basically, ORRA has an additional frequency now whereas before they only had two frequencies, so you will still be able to use any of your existing channels with any of the radios programmed on the new plan.

Okay... so today I programmed my radios and Dawie's radio to the new ORRA layout. So I made this littel chart to compare the old with the new and on which channels you will have to be to communicate with guys who have not updated their radios yet... hope it helps a bit with the confusion.

So basically there are only 4 channels with ORRA1 now same as old ORRA2 plus tone. Channels 5-8 are programmed with the old band plan to communicate with those that have not upgraded yet.

Strictly speaking it's 3 frequencies with different tones. Channels 7 & 8 are the original two channels without tone

Correct... but we called it the Hilux channel due to the tone. AFAIK none of the other dealers programmed any tones onto the two frequencies. So in other words the other ORRA members only had "two channels"

Just curious

Seems like we have to pay to have our radios programmed. I am quite capable of programming my own radio. I Asked what the frequencies are but no one seems to know. So, my question remains. What are the frequencies, or can anyone refer me to a reference where the frequencies are listed. (Both the HF and VHF bands)

Thanks guys.

All the ORRA-appointed dealers have signed non-disclosure forms, so nope, the frequencies are not available to the general public. ORRA is safeguarding the newly allocated frequency as much as they can.

This is the reason why ORRA is trying to keep the new frequencies secret as far as possible so that it will not happen again.

I do speak under correction by believe ICASA can issue the same frequency to different customers... Eric?

There's a general shortage of VHF frequencies, so ICASA will re-issue the same frequency many times over, depending on the number of users in any given geographical area. When ICASA has 100 registered radios in an area - generally 50km radius of, say, JHB - then they consider the frequency to be "full". But then this same frequency will be available in another geographical area - let's say Klerksdorp - as Klerksdorp is more than 100km (50 + 50km) away from Jhb. So it will be available here for use until there are another 100 users on it.

In practice, ICASA does try and stagger the amount of users per frequency on a regional basis, but considering there are probably in excess of 500,000 VHF radios countrywide with only some 3000 or so VHF frequencies, they are bound to overlap! So this is why we make use of "CTCSS" - or "Sub-audible tones", to help eliminate the chatter of other users on the same frequency, but either on a different tone or no tone at all.

One of these days we will be moving to Digital radio - think cell phone - then things should be a lot less irritating. Digital radio is already in use by some large concerns here and the price of equipment will fall as the numbers grow.

Oom Eric

Give us some more info on these Digital Radio's please. Apart from the price, can they also be tuned to the ORRA frequencies, etc? Can they communicate with the other VHF radios?

I am looking at making a radio purchase soon, would it not be better to then to get a digital one? Or is their popularity still some time to come? I’ve searched the net but have not come up with much info, therefore I thought to consult the resident oracle! :D:

Re: ORRA - New Frequencies - 10 Dec 2011

Ernst, the digital radios can do both conventional analogue (i.e. ORRA) modes as well as digital modes, but the problem lies with the different specifications between the manufacturers. The various model are not compatible with one another and currently the price is some 2 to 3 times the price of a conventional radio.

However, I would be very happy to sell these radios... ;) We are currently busy with a Mining group for such a system, but we might still change to yet another standard instead.

Have you guys seen this?

http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/sho ... ost1059480" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Looks like 4x4Comm has more licenses than offiial AAWDC member count (limited to 200)and now they can't get any new lisences.

This to me looks more like an AAWDC admin problem than ORRA; surely they all paid ORRA lisence fees

So I made this littel chart to compare the old with the new and on which channels you will have to be to communicate with guys who have not updated their radios yet... hope it helps a bit with the confusion.

When I enquired about the stickers (6 months ago), I was advised that they no longer had a sponsor to make / supply stickers....so I left it at that as it does clog up my windscreen...... ;-)
