Re: Dream becoming reality
Ja, the Hogsback can be pretty cold this time of year. Pity about the rain because there are so many great hiking paths in the area, some as short as an hour and others that will take the whole day. Lots of waterfalls to see and I saw your interest in the old yellowwood trees ... there's a lot of them up there and "The Big Tree" is an ancient Eastern Cape Monarch (Yellowwood) that's about 800 to 900 years old. If you are interested, it's about a 2 hr walk there and back (either from the main road or from the Madonna & Child Falls).
Enjoy!
Enjoy!
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Yeah, I should have posted this over the weekend, but things got a bit 'topsy turvey' over the last week.
I was hoping that it would work out such that when George made it this far that we could all spend some time together at our place up there. Alas, George and Mari were on no set schedule and we ourselves were just getting over a serious bout of flu when they came through, so the cold Hogsback was unfortunately a 'no go'.
There may well be another time!
Anyway, as it turned out, George and Mari managed to drop in briefly for coffee on their way between Grahamstown and Yellow sands (not confirmed as they were still going to 'play it by ear'). It was really great to have had the opportunity to be able to meet them. Both really nice folk ..... and tall! Sjoe! Both of them! .... Maybe I'm just short at 5' 9"
Our short time together flew by so quickly it seemed it was over before it had really begun, but we did manage to snap a couple of pics before they left.
A privilege and a pleasure to have met you George and Mari! Good luck on your journey guys! Happy trails!

Re: Dream becoming reality
Thanks Andy it was really nice meeting you.Ja we did feel like giants next to you and the missus
When we left you we headed to Morgans Bay and stayed a few days there.
The funny thing is when I drove into Kei Mouth I got super excited when I saw a SFA with club stickers. I realized it was Bosvark one of our oold members bakkies. I walked up to the new owner and started chatting.Wanted to take a pic,but this guy was furious. Old Bosvark is a rust bucket of note. A Caution to Johan STAY OUT OF KEI MOUTH.
After that we headed into Transkei. Our first stop was Dwesa Nature reserve. This was a really cool place and if the weather was better we would have stayed longer. From there we went to Hole in the whole and chickened out of camping and stayed in a rondavel. We had bad weather for the last 3 days and just wanted to have a peace full sleep. Then we headed up to Mbotyi and stayed there. From there we left Transkei and is now in Port Edward. We are going to stay a week here at the OT Strand Resort. There weekly rate is R85 per day. It will give us time to do washing and enjoy some creature comforts. Hopefully I can do some fishing.
A recap on Transkei- It is a beautiful place and everything I expected. Unfortunately we had bad weather. There is so many dirt roads that you can spent a lot of time there. The only downside is the begging. The people are either very poor or opportunistic. If I dont hear the word "SWEEEATS" again it will be to late.
Here is a few pics

Nice George!
So you didn't go to Mazeppa bay? .... Would have been a nice place to go fishing and its also very pretty there with a camp site and rondawels. I think you would have both enjoyed it.

That was our plan but could not find any info on camping. I was unfortunately off line then. I got a number for the hotel and asked them if there were any campsites , but they said there was none in Mazepa so we skipped it. next time..Mud Dog wrote:Nice George!

Re: Dream becoming reality
Howzat Guys and Gals
Just an update.
After Transkei we spent a week in Port Edward(TO Strand). This was really nice to just relax. We spent a week there.
From there we went to Pietermaritzburg. I needed to get a pair of Jim green boots on Pieter's advice.Awesome boots BTW.
From there we went to Howick and then slept one night at the Midmar dam. The next morning we left for SANI Pass. It was Sathurday and the pass just opened after it was closed from Monday-Friday due to snow. It was a really nice drive just lots of traffic. We had a drink at the pub but did not wanted to stay there. To crowded for our liking. We then headed to Molumong Guesthouse. It is just after St James mission and is basically a backpacker style place run by the local community. Very nice.We wanted to camp but it was too cold. The next day we headed to Katse and stayed there in the lodge. The next day we did the tour of the dam and then headed out via Fouriesburg and stayed at Drakensville resort. From there we headed to Dundee and stayed a night. We visited the "Slag van Bloedrivier memorial site and the we headed to St Lucia. We are currently here and will stay here for a week or two.
Lesotho- It is an amazing country. I will be back. The people are friendly and hardworking. This is surely Hilux country. The back roads are bad.Just as we like it.

They're really great pics, George!!george wrote:Ek sal like om 'n bietjie kretiek oor die foto's te kry.Ek speel nog rond
I'm not really qualified to crit, but your subject matter is good, I also like the composition of most (the first two bird pics -kingfisher -are fantastic), colour is vibrant, subject is focussed. Then, if they are all full frame (not cropped), there are 2 or 3 that IMO could have better composition .... the turkey buzzard should be more centred since there is nothing else that is subject matter ...... I also think that you should have included the whole Rhino, centred ..... same with the ellie, his ear and feet are cut off.
Love the falcon! The subject matter in the Impala pic is brilliant! Should have included his hooves and a little foreground.
You asked for it!
That said, even experienced photographers sometimes get caught in the moment and haste to capture the scene, that they get it wrong in some way.
All said, great pics for an amateur photographer!

What camera and lens are you using, George?
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Re: Dream becoming reality
Thanks Guys.I feel much better today. So much so that I am packing up and driving further.it was 24 hours of hell, but I have a good nurse.
Luckily we bought the local treatment that is at any pharmacy and when you start feeling bad you start with the treatment.I just need to test myself again in a weeks time.

Antibiotikas ens. Dis baie maklik om jou hier self te behandel as in SA,maar ja ek le liewers in 'n Medi Kliniek as hierso
