platpot?

Post by dalkill »

I found platpot falkirk 8B laying in my dada backyard.

1. A bit rusted. How do you clean it?
2. What can be cooked in it?

Bearing in mind I already have size 3 pot which is already more than enough for my family.
Is the platpot any use?

Hi Shaaker. You can use it to make a potbrood or potjiebrood. Make a half meter hole into the soil the diameter little bigger than the pot. Make some fire inside the hole with hardekool. At same time, an other fire outside the hole. When it woods become brickets, the party time start. Buy or make your own bread dough and put it in the platpot. Put on the lid and put the pot in the hole on top of the brickets. Have a sheet of tinplate and cover the hole. On top of that sheet, put the outside brickets on it. For hour and half take out the platpot with some hook and you will have the best bread you can find. Try it.

How to clean the rusted pot, I'm not sure. Let's hear what the other guys said.

jip, brush off the loose rust.

Then make a potjie with lots of veggie off-cuts, I used a lot of potato skins.

Get some "fat" from your local butcher, this will soak into the metal and help to prevent future rust.

clean out, wash, add crumpled up newspaper into the pot to soak up any moisture, to prevent rust.

You could also add some oil to the surface, but this gets "nasty" if you dont use the pot for a few months .... the newspaper trick works better.

and yes, then the breadpot is ready

I prefer a Platboom pot to a Drie pootpot.
Platboom allows you to "brown" the meat prior to adding the rest of the ingredients.

If you ever consider letting that big'ol Falkirk 8 go, please keep me in mind!

Chris , how do i get the fat to soak into the metal?
do i cook the fat with the with the veggie off cuts?
Presumably that will treat the inside. What about the outside fat treatment?

I'm assuming the the same fat treatment can be use for the 3 leg potjie too?

Kook The fat & veggie scraps in the pot. The outside will sort itself out. Just wash & scrub the inside & outside of the pot to get it presentable before cooking the scraps inside the pot.

No, the old people use to cook soap in it, no use for it at all.
You can give it to me. :mocking:

I also prefer the platboom to the driepoot round.
I use course salt and cook it for long with water in the pot. Depending on the size of the pot i use a whole bag
or even 2. It costs nothing. The properties of the salt removes moisture, oil and impurities in the metal.
You can see it in the water when you are finished. Just use metal wool (staalwol) and soapwater beforehand
to remove most rust first.

Oh, and if you want to create very nice seal for your pot:
When cleaned, pre-cooked and all and all...smear thin layer of vegetable, avocado or olive oil onto
inside surface of your pot. Pre-heat oven to 180C and stick it in there for 15-20 min or so.
You get beautiful enamel like, non stick, rust proof, easy to clean surface to your pot. Think it's called a patella (not the knee cap as in medical terms) I also use the crumpled up news papers when stored.

I find Olive oil gets less "galsterig" than sunflower oil when you don't use your pot often and the focus must be on "Thin".

Crumbled up newspapers is a must

I think it's called "patina", thx for the tip. I also prefer the platboom pot, more versatile.
