What have you done with you Hilux in 2008

Post by ThysdJ »

The year (2008) is rapidly drawing to a close and it is a good time to sit back and have a look over the last year to see what you have achieved and take stock of the experiences you shared with friends and loved ones, including your trusty Hilux.

This is where you can list all the trails you have done, all the excursions or expeditions you undertook and also the maintenance and or modifications you did to your vehicle, also list the mishaps you experienced, the breakdowns and the times you had to be recovered from asticky situation. Call it a sort of "Book of Life" for 2008 which list the sweet victories and the bitter defeats. You can also list the km's travelled and more or less a split between off-road (including dirt roads) and tar-road km's.

If anybody can think of something else that would be interesting to know, please list it and then the rest of us can update our posts accordingly.

Use the basic layout below as a guide-line to submit your Hilux's "Book of Life" 2008

Duration of trip : 3 weeks
Terrain traversed : Tar roads 30% Dirt roads 70%

2) Destination : Sutherland Tankwa Karoo
Distance traveled : 3500 km
Duration of trip : 5 days
Terrain traversed : Tar roads 20% Dirt roads 80%

Maintenance:
1) Regular Services/Maintenance:
Normal 10 000 km service before Namibia trip.
Due for follow-up soon.
3) Modifications:
Modified radiator: Fitted BMW 328 radiator for better fit (old radiator hung out low down in harms way).
Installed airconditioner and moved aircon condenser to belly of vehicle.
Rerouted exhaust.
Built aluminium canopy with spare-wheel carrier.
3) Break Downs:
None

Km's Travelled over the year:
1) Total Approximately : 14000 km's
Tar Roads : 5000 km's
Dirt/Off Road : 9000 km's

Mishaps/Recoveries/Booboos
(We know they dont happen, but sometimes people make mistakes)
1) Knocked a tyre off the rim at Swarbergsvlei in January.
2) Made wrong gear selection at the Dune Charge and OOPS we lost 100 points.
3) Exhaust hanger bracket broke in Kgalahadi and again near Luderitz.
4) Aircon gas leaked out on Namib trip.
5) Right rear brake self-adjuster came loose and was removed at Koës in Namibia.
6) Kaspaas had a bonnet-open fuel starvation episode in the Dunes in March, which Mr Bosvark will insist on reminding me about. Till this day it has not happened again and no fixes were applied. I dont even know what caused it. Maybe it was just a phase and he's over it now. -- PS We now know what caused this. The fuel line was routed over the exhaust by some clever dude who did the conversion originally. This caused the fuel to overheat in the fuel line and percolate, causing Kaspaas to have asthmatic fits. Fuel line was rerouted and problems stopped.
7) Water hose between the thermostat and the waterpump perished and started leaking water while on the Takbok Trail Recce in Nov. Luckily I noticed this because steam came out from under the bonnet from water being sprayed onto the exhaust manifold. This was the second rubber hose that burst due to age, and since then all suspect rubber hoses were replaced.

As the year is not at an end yet, I will keep on updating this post with all the relevant info up until 31 Dec 2008. Now let us hear yours.

This is a great idea and most of my stories (mishaps) are already posted on this forum.

Trips undertaken:
Cape Town to Transkei - January 08
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1536
Trails Visited:
None. I don't play well with the other children

Maintenance:
190 000KM service
after 2 new radiators, and only 300kms before the head gasket went BOOM!
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3693&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=20

Modifications:
Before the head gasket went boom I had already committed to the Cruiser Ventilated Disc Brake mod, so that little trip to the mechanic (for new discs/pads and the gasket work) came in at a whopping 7K. And this after already spending money on a new radiator and a service and compression/pressure test at useless MARKET TOYOTA no less. Those don't come cheap I can tell you.

Breakdowns:
see above
2 spectacular booms! Both going up Kloof Nek drive.
The first one involved a beautiful spray of green coolant and super-heated steam while the second was more of a billowing smoke effect, yet equally impressive!

No idea of my KMs travelled (too scared to put a yearly figure on my fuel costs!)

Mishaps/Booboos:

Just today I tried getting new tyres...
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4344
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=4347

but that didn't really turn out as planned!

Everything keeps going wrong, but hey, I really love my lux!
