B Class merc

Post by dalkill »

Within the next couple of months we will probably be in the market for a platkar for SWAMBO.

The 2000 corolla getting a bit long in the tooth now, and we spending alot on repairs.

At first i thought of an Etios sedan. Good old toyota value for money. And i love my Toyotas.

But since it will be for her, i thought i would get her the car she always wanted. She also wanted to be a soccer mom driving the merc with the big hat and sunglasses :D:
She always loved merc. Well me too but my heart is with Toyota.
So i thought of looking at the B-Class merc.

I like to look at trends in the market for a vehicle long before actually ready to buy, giving me a good idea when a good buy comes along.

SO off to gumtree...

https://www.gumtree.co.za/a-cars-bakkie ... 0897827709

https://www.gumtree.co.za/a-cars-bakkie ... 0025880909

These don't seem to bad looking??? Should i be scared of such good prices?

My biggest concern as first time Merc buyer, what would be repair cost compared to say an Etios.
Are Merc spares generally ridiculously more than Toyota (not that their spares that cheap anyway).
Are their good aftermarket parts avail?

If you need to change a starter motor, you drop the subframe with the engine and gearbox. If you need to change the aircon pump, you drop the subframe with the engine and gearbox..... you get the picture..... Sorry, but I hate those things. I worked for Mercedes, but I am Toyota at heart all the way!!!

Also did my apprenticeship at a private Merc workshop. The A and B class very difficult to work on. We found a way to only lower the rear of the si frame to replace starters etc but as dd6 said its a mission. I will NOT buy Merc second hand. They are designed in my opinion to buy new and sell when service plan runs out. Not high mileage cars like Toyota.

There is a reason why they are so cheap.

Spares expensive, hard to work on, not reliable vehicles.

Many other cars to choose from but Merc and BMW probably the worse of all when 2nd hand.

Why not try an Auris, for slightly more you can get an Auris of same age.

+1 on staying away from Merc....

The Wife drives a 2006 A170. Its not that they are bad cars, its just unusual things that keep on breaking, and then costing an arm and leg to get fixed.

So far the following has broken:
- The key would not turn in the ignition (electronic key - internal coil in the key broke - coil replaced by Indy Key specialist)
- Car went into limp mode because of faulty brake light switch - yes the one at the pedal - The equivalent part for a Toyota probably cost R50 at midas, but the merc part was R1800.
- Car went into limp mode because of dirty throttle position sensor - and almost had to be stripped to get cleaned.
- Interior Door handle broke (how does this happen?)

Before the Merc she had a 1.8T Passat, and it also had its strange things that broke.

Seems like german cars are no longer designed to outlive their service plans.

I once replaced glow plugs on a B200 CDi. Took me a whole day to do the job. I think the customer was charged 8 hours of labour.

Buy the Merc OR deny SWAMBO her dream
Guess it depends on how often she will use it. There are many things you can have fixed NOT at agents.

You can buy a proper Toyota of same year and same milleage at double the price. You can do a lot of repair work on the Merc for that R70k difference.

Is not only Merc parts that are expensive, nowadays it seems like vehicle manufacturers are trying to outprice each other.
They want to see who can screw their loyal clients the most.

Since I had my Aygo and Auris I do not see Toyota as this reliable, affordable vehicle no more. The only difference between them and the others is that they keep their second hand value very good for some reason.

Here are some examples:
1. Was told Auris' alternator cannot be rebuilt, must get new one for R10k, had it rebuilt at Auto Magneto for R2300
2. Was quoted for clutch kit and dual mass flywheel for Auris R18k at Toyota, bought it at Autozone for R9k
3. VW Quoted R15k for dual mass flywheel on Caddy, I bought clutch kit and flywheel from Alert Parts also at R9k
4. VW Touareg's rear silencer cost a woppy R30k at agents, can have a new one built at Powerflow at R6k which is still way to much for a silencer.
5. Touareg's propshaft cannot be rebuilt according to agents, new one R20k. Tritorq in CPT rebuilt and balanced it for R4500.00
6. Jimny's propshaft cannot get new universals, was built that way, cannot fix, must replace, new one R6k
7. Auris injectors R4k PER inector
8. Wait for this one......., was repainting the Tazz the other day, Bee Sting antenna on roof, R1,200 for the BASE ONLY at Toyota, R86.00 for complete unit at Autozone.

I almost did what you wanna do now. I bought a 2007 Toaureg V8. I know spares are expensive and I know it is heavy on fuel, but same year, same milleage, same luxuaries, same size Cruiser (for example) will cost me 3 times the amount I paid for the Touareg. I can buy lots of spares with the extra R200k, and then this is not a good example because Cruiser spares are almost as expensive as VW spares.

Our director’s wife has a 13 year old A class. Extremely reliable and parts are very cheap, well - in PE at least. One example, R1700 for a replaced ball joint and removal and cleaning of throttle body as it was ‘hesitant’ on the power side. All back to normal.

Vehicles are about how you look after it. If you don’t look after it, it won’t look after you.

Thanks Thabo, but IF i'm going the merc route, it will have to be the B Class. Wife likes that one.

Eish, why can life not be to simple as to be able to walk into merc dealer and buy new... :D:

So the opinion seems to be 50 / 50.
Merc just pain in the butt to work on. And spares are expensive.. but so to Toyota.

I must admit, still leaning towards giving wife her dream
Happy wife, Happy life after all.

I just to to figure out how much of pain in the butt it will be over owning toyota, which for most part has given me moderate headaches of the years.

Had the same problem, also followed logic, but there are so many cars I would love to drive but stay away from them because of logic.

I decided to take the risk and just buy the cars I want, drive it for a while, sell it and buy the next one. As long as I always buy at a bargain and sell at a profit and I can drive the cars I always wanted to drive.

What made my decision easier is my Auris. I just realised that Toyota spares became as expensive as VW and Merc, so the spare price is not a advantage no more.
Toyotas also became computer boxes on which you cannot work , so that one is out of the list.
Try to change an Auris' Alternator and waterpump, it is also a matter of taking apart a great part of the engine, absolutely no easy job, take that one off the list.

Just do it. If you do not do it you will forever wonder if it would have been the right thing to do, or wonder if maybe you must have bought the Merc. If you don't do it you will nether know.
If it works out expensive, at least you learned your lesson and lessons are valuable. Just make sure you buy at a bargain so that if you see it is not your car so that you can sell again at a bargain to get rid of it quickly. If you buy right you can buy a car, drive it 6 months and sell it without it costing you money (if you buy cash of course, banks are dead loss)

Another aregueent is: You Always pay for a car.

Either you pay high premiums and insurance for a new car, or you pay for repair cost on an old car.

You can buy her a new RAV and spend R8k per month on premiums or you can spend R8k per month on the Merc's repair cost (won't be that much)

In 5 years time the RAV's value will probably fall from R500k to R350k, the Merc from R70k to probably R50k

All the above comments and advice make sense and have some logic. A female work friend had a B class and she was frowned upon many times for coming to work late. I later discovered when becoming involved due to her habitual tardiness that it really was her unreliable transport. She had endless problems with the B class and to make matters worse, she just couldn't get rid of it. Eventually she sold it privately after having spend a fortune and bought a Honda and yes, you guessed it, she managed restore her punctuality!

If you go the Benz route, in Moreleta Park there is a guy by the name of Chris Cloete who is a Bemz expert. VERY, VERY full of sh!t when it comes to quality repairs.

He is superbly knowledgable on MB products, from classics to brand new.

AND I often see Hiluxes and Fortuners there for services and clutch replacements.

Maybe have him check out a car before buying?

Just go check the car out before you get excited. I have been disapointed with many webuycars vehicles, they look great on the pictures but often not so great when you get there. Don't buy from them unless you saw it.

I agree with Pieter here. Go check the car and do take your time to check it out. Webycars seems to me like a wholesaler of vehicles and thus the there is some loop hole they can use in the event of CPA claims against them. This is what I could gather from various topics on them. They offer great value to the buyer, provided the vehicle is sound and all check out fine.

When you get there they tell you very clearly you buy it as is, there is not warranty, nothing, you pay for it and the problem becomes yours. I think they get away with it because they are wholesalers.
