Fuel levies 2009/10

Post by Niel »

So, Trevor milked the cow (Manual-ly) even further in the budget yesterday by announcing the 41 cents fuel levy increase divided between diesel and petrol. I thought we have a struggling world economy. Your comments?

Ok here is the detail

Fuel levies
General fuel levy
Given the importance of maintaining a strong price signal to limit fuel consumption, road
congestion and environmental impact, it is proposed to increase the general fuel levy. In
addition, noting the increasing use of diesel in passenger vehicles, government intends
to equalise the general fuel levy on diesel and petrol over time. It is proposed to increase
the general fuel levy on petrol and diesel by 23 and 24 cents per litre respectively from
1 April 2009. The diesel fuel levy refund relief for the primary sector remains unchanged
in percentage terms and its monetary value will be adjusted accordingly.

According to TM's budget speech these levies will be channeled to local govt to maintain and upgrade roads infrastructure in their jurisdictions. We have heard this before, I dont agree with it because money does not go where it is intended to go, but besides casting our ballots what recourse do we have to change this?

Have you thought of fitting a 4Y with an EFI conversion? Gives good low down torque and much better fuel efficiency.

george, what motors you have on your boat.
I was looking at a boat with pair of 90hp yamaha's at one point in my life to hunt the yellowfin tune...
at 40 nauticle miles , I got numbers like R4000 for petrol from other boat owners.
could it really be that much?

Hi Shaakir.Yep sounds about right.I have 2 90hp yammies(2 stroke pre-mix).My motors use about 3lt per nautical mile.
I trip of 100nm wil work out to about R2000.Then it is just to get there and back.If you are going to be trolling out there. You could easily spent a total of R3000 bucks for the day.The 4 stroke motors is a lot lighter on fuel.
For the roadies: 1nm = 1,852km :ugeek:

The RAF is permanently bankrupt. They currently get over R 700 000 000.00 (YES, SEVEN HUNDRED MILLION RAND!!!) per month and it is still not enough to cover the claims. They apparently make in excess of R1 billion a months worth of payments ( I wish they could show me who receives that) a month. In August they changed the law and now you cannot claim unless you have a minimum of a 30% disability from an accident and even then it is capped at a maximum of R160 000 per year. So where is all that money going once all the smaller claims are settled?

The implication? If you cause an accident and the innocent party cannot work anymore; he was earning R500k a year, the RAF will only pay R160k. Gues who's liable for the difference? YOU!!
