Re: Late night/early morning crew
Went past there at about 9:30 this morning, took one look at the Q, and just drove past. Upon my return from gallivanting, I took a chance and drove past there again, as it is on the way home. Found parking three cars from the Entrance under the shade of a tree, walked right in and out again, in under 9 minutes. Could have been even quicker but there was an elderly couple before me and I waited patiently for them to hop along. So, go now and vote and grab a cuppa Wimopy coffee for free on the way home!

When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Re: Late night/early morning crew
You were right this time as far as I was concerned ..... I was really buggered ..... had a concrete project planned for yesterday afternoon & stood waiting for the mix to arrive from 1.30 (supposed to be there latest 2.00pm). Got a call to tell me there was a delay but it would be on the way shortly, 'cause there was a breakdown at their plant and they would be sourcing from a second plant further away. To cut a long story (and long wait) short, two trucks of mix arrived at 4.10 pm and we only finished after 7.00pm. Back breaking work for an 'ole toppie' like me.....the rest must be sleeping....
Had a quick shower, attempted a few posts here ... warmed up & ate my dinner after which the lights mysteriously went out .... almost like as if Eskom was busy in my head
So! .... as they say, early to bed, early to rise, and here I am.

Ja boet, I can still remember (I'm not that bad yet) saying almost those exact words in what seems like only a few years ago. But hey, keep up the attitude and mind-set ... it does help. :!:
If there's one thing only to do, it should be to enjoy your kids while they're stil real laaities, 'cause you only need to blink twice and wipe the shite from your eyes ... and they'll be saying the same thing to their mates.

Re: Late night/early morning crew
The dogs woke me up at 04:00 again, but this time I did not get out of bed. Watched some interesting articles on Discovery (might have been Nat Geog) and then some true-life rescue drama followed by real Cop chases in the USA, then a movie on M-Net and finally an hour's worth of news on one of the News channels before I eventually dragged myself out of bed. If I had my laptop with me, I would probably have logged in as well but didn't feel like the long walk to my study...
And I only went to sleep after 12:00, was watching a movie until then as well

Re: Late night/early morning crew
That was luckily the one part of good advice I was given and took to heart when they were born. I have been enjoying every step of the way. I made an active decision whilst Eddie was a baby that I am not one day going to be the "cats in the cradle" dad.Mud Dog wrote: If there's one thing only to do, it should be to enjoy your kids while they're stil real laaities, 'cause you only need to blink twice and wipe the ga-ga from your eyes ... and they'll be saying the same thing to their mates.
My own dad died when I was 8 and even before then his work routine made relationship difficult. I luckily had a good relationship with my best friends dad since he was around for us (me and his 3 laaities) while growing up. He at the time was in the fortunate position that he could choose his working time so he went to work at 4 in the mornings so that he could be at home in the afternoons when we arrived back from school. Even today my friend and his dad is still very close, they are still always involved in some sort of project in the garage together (their latest is to renovate 2 old beach buggies his dad bought)
I changed my working habits/responsibilities to spend more time at home and much less travelling also less hours at the office ( I work from home whenever I get the chance). I make sure that I take time to invest in them and enjoy it thoroughly.
Yesterday I started preparing the boys room for its "makeover". I ripped out the carpet as we are going to install laminated flooring. Eddie for the first time (he is now 5) could really help me with something actually useful by assisting me in removing the old wooden strips around the edges of the room that used to keep the carpet in place (up to now they only helped me by banging stuff and playing with my tools) He even pulled out a few nails out of the concrete floor with a baby claw hammer
I can't wait for the day when I replace his set of plastic tools for a real set

Re: Late night/early morning crew
A friend of mine had underfloor heating installed in their TV/Family Room a few years back, but he has also since hurled it. Forget the reason but I do remember him saying it has to be switched on permanently throughout the Winter for it to have any real effect and it did not do wonderful things to his electricity bill. I should imagine that it would be a nice to have though, apart from this because it spreads the heat pretty evenly throughout the room, but is just too expensive to run full time. And then it does require a good few hours before its heating effects are really felt.

Sometimes a day or two I'm not in favour of it, neither laminated flooring, Ben. That stuff is mostly plastic, at least the stuff we get down here is. "Click, click, click" when you walk on it, but for a boy's room, with the dirt problem, it's a fair option (a damn site better than carpets for sure). If it's not genuine wood, I would rather opt for parquet flooring which is also easy to keep clean. (Floors must be absulutely moisture free though - damp sealed). Can also be re-coated anytime it starts to look tatty from scuffing. And then it does require a good few hours before its heating effects are really felt.
Check it out and give it a thought, Benny.

At the cost and ease to install it is really worth while. Where we stay the soil outside is read clay and it stains everything. Do yourself a favour and read up on laminated flooring. True the finishing layer is not real wood but its actually better as it does not damage that easy.
It comes with a 7 year guarantee for the cheaper versions and up to 20 years for the more expensive ones, with parquet flooring at 2-3 times + the cost I can easily change it again in a few years time its cheap enough. The sound is also not that bad if you use the proper sound proofing and damp proofing layer underneath, I think problems comes in when people cut corners and doing things the wrong way. I have spoken to a few people who has it installed and have watched a few places like the canteen at work where it is been installed for almost 5 years already with heavy traffic and they do last well. As far as I can ascertain the only negative is that they can be damaged by staying damp if not sealed from underneath or if you spill water and let it seep through by not drying it up quick enough.
At this point in time laminated flooring is the top seller of all floor coverings around the world so it can not be all that bad. And even if it is at less the R 10K for my complete house it will not be a train smash If I rip it all out again in a few years time when I do alterations and extensions to my house. I am going to pay off the final big chunk on my house in June when I get my bonus and then I am debt free, ( I will just keep about R10K outstanding which I can pay off in the remaining 15 years of the bond to keep it active) then in a year or two's time when I saved up some dough I want to extend the living room and build a new main bedroom and replace my whole roof with a high pitched one so I can later include a second story loft as well. At that stage I may decide to redo the whole floor in the living area again or simply add to the (by then) existing laminate. So yes I have done a lot of research on the subject and found that this is currently the best option that make the most sense for my situation.
Eric/Cassie
Again I did some research and checked out a few guys with under tile heating and will agree that under tile heating under ceramic tiles is a big waste of time. The only guy where the heating was really effective had his tiles starting to crack from the heat. But a friend of mine installed it, when he renovated a new house he bought, under the slate tiles in the living areas of his house and it works like a dream. They switch it on by 4 in the afternoon and off again by 6-7 pm and the floors maintain their "heat" the rest of the evening and the electric bill is not that horrendous. I thought that if I deem it necessary after this winter I will install the heating.

Maybe I'm just too much "old-school", Ben. I'm just personally "allergic" to plastics in certain areas of construction, having grown up and worked with wood / concrete / ceramics / bricks and fired clay.

I have over time learned that old school is not always the way to go, if you do not embrace and move with new things you are going to be left behind at one stage or the other. Old school is sometimes a very good thing but be open minded as old school can become very limiting too.
If you look at the different aspects as I explained earlier anything other then laminated will be limiting ,tying me down, wat meen ek gaan myself in die voet skiet

Re: Late night/early morning crew
Ja well in anycase I bought the boards for the bedrooms already. I am just now busy reading a 55 page ebook instalation manual that I downloaded from http://www.findanyfloor.com/pub/pdf/Ins ... lGuide.pdf.
One thing that I have read at different places is that they recommend you not install your boards in a H-end joint pastern but rather a staggered end joint pastern.
To me doing the staggered thing just feels wrong. As if you did not plan your installation properly beforehand. I remember as a kid I always used to watch knotty pine ceilings wherever we went and a staggered set-up used to irritate the living daylights out of me. If I do wiring all wires must run uniform and at right angles etc, if a face brick wall has its vertical pips staggered I can catch a fit, my wife has one of these hanging sets of cutlery and if I unpack the dishwasher I will first make sure all the already hanging knifes have their sharp ends facing the same way and all items are in their correct places before adding the rest of the stuff .... and I am no way in hell going to install my laminated flooring with staggered joints.

Bennie, Ted had ceramic tiles, so you raise a good point. I know he was happy at first and it did work, but had to be permanently on for it to be effective. Your suggestion of slate tiles sounds interesting, I should think this is a huge improvement over ceramic tiles. For some reason, plastic laminated floors are not that popular in my area, unless they use these for the new housing complexes that are popping up all over. I have never yet even seen these installed in a house here in Klerksdorp, guess I will have to make chommies with someone in one of the newer areas and go and visit. The only plastic laminated flooring tiles I have seen are those for sale in the shops. So, go for it and let us know the results.

Re: Late night/early morning crew
It haapens t me too!
