Delo 400
Weet iemand of Delo 400 n sintetiese olie is of nie?
Dankie
Evert

Re: Delo 400
Hi Evert,
You have made an excellent decision, many guys don't worry running in a new/rebuilding engine, they say it runs perfect right from the word go, but they may land up shortening the lifespan of the engine significantly... 30W is perfect for running in, the fuel consumption will be a higher, and cold starting will suffer a bit... but multi-grade oils tend to glaze the bore with used to break the engine in... monograde 30W/40W assists in bedding the rings in... don't drive the new engine to lazy, give it a bit of stick quite often, the rings need good engine compression to bed in 100%... there a saying in the engine rebuilder circles 'drive it like you stole it' when breaking to engine in... change the oil and oil filter after 1000km...
On the choice of oils, make sure the oil is rated CF4... CH4... or CI4... or CI4plus... or CJ4... Delo 400 is one of these oils, other excellent oils for a flat tappet cam engine(like the 4Y) are, in order of preference:
Shell ROTELLA® T SAE 15W-40 API CI4plus or CJ4(new)
- About Rotella T http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shell_Rotella_T
- CI4plus version tech doc: http://www.epc.shell.com/Docs/GPCDOC_lo ... TDS_71.pdf
- CJ4 version tech: http://www.epc.shell.com/Docs/GPCDOC_X_ ... 94_3EE.pdf
Shell Rimula R3 X 15W-40W (this is what I'm presently using, would have liked to use Rotella T)
- tech doc: [url]http://www.epc.shell.com/Docs/GPCDOC_SA ... -4.pdf[url]
The Rotella T is by far the best option, can be a bit difficult to find but is available in SA, just phone around or call Shell Customer Care and ask them for the closest supplier/retailer in your area... many sales guys will tell you Rimula and Rotella are exactly the same... they are not... Rotella T is so highly rated it's even got it's own WikiPedia page!
My next oil change I'll be using Rotella T CJ4

Re: Delo 400
Evert, if you still want to use Delo 400, it's also a very good option, being SAE 15W-40 CJ4, specifically the LE variant...
Read more here: http://www.caltex.com.au/products_oil_detail.asp?id=277
It's not synthetic... taken from the url above:
"Caltex Delo 400 LE SAE 15W-40 is formulated with ISOSYN® base stocks, which rival synthetics in critical engine tests, and an optimal blend of the latest technology in dispersant, detergent, oxidation inhibition, anti-wear, corrosion inhibition, viscosity improver, and defoaming additives... "

Not at all sure about diesel motors .... never owned one, but Bretton sounds pretty clued up here. He should be able to steer you right.

Re: Delo 400
Old Gerhard (4EPajero on the 4x4comms site) is well informed and did a lot of research on the subject. According to him Delo 400 is the best mineral oil on the market for both Petrol and diesel engines. Aslo read somewhere that during independent tests Delo 400 even outperformed certain Synthetic oils.2.8 d/cab SFA wrote:Diesal oil? What would you recommend?

Re: Delo 400
Delo 400, Shell Rotella T, Shell Rimula are all actually excellent diesel oils. I use them in my petrol engine, because they still contain a decent amount of ZDDP(anti-weat agents), unlike the vast majority of the new oils, where the ZDDP has been all but eliminated(for the sake of catalytic converter longevity)... So use Delo 400 or Rotella T is your diesel dog as well!

I would not trust the guys from Stay Away Completely too much, their decision on oil would be more based on financial factors then on merrit, afterall they have a business to run, money to make...2.8 d/cab SFA wrote: tx, gonna ask the guys from SAC what they use, will be interesting to see
Certain members here used to work there, they will tell you stories about SAC that will make the heir on your neck stand up straight.

Boksburg branch been good so far,
I suppose depends on the people there, SWAMBO card goes to toyota boksburg, the old one in Atlas road, as I went once the the new one in northrand road (lexus branch)and was not impressed with them at all, even had oily finger prints on the car when i got it back.
