I'm surprised... with all the advancements in diesel tech 96kw and 285nm... for a 4.2D 6-Pot is pretty poor, albeit a non-turbo engine!

My 4Y give 92kw and 200nm!

And it's a bit of a donkey, and heavier on juice than any D4D....

Can't make up my mind on this one, but the rear section with the high window sills looks more like an after-market add-on. Might look better in real life than it appears in the photos.

But the 76 SW still looks better!

This is a utilitarian vehicle, a workhorse. How does Toyota SA justify a price tag of R428 800 for a vehicle that is basically 1980's technology with a 1980's bodyshape and 1940's comfort specs? That is just nuts. These vehicles are phenominal, and I would buy one of these in an instant, but at that price I would rather buy 4 SFA Hiluxes and still have money to spare to spruce them up properly.

Where are the guys from Toyota SA? I would like to hear their side of the story.

I think Toyota SA must have their brains in a knot with this (fantastic) vehile's price. Why this price? whats wrong with them?

hi am on the second one now the new one being the wide front 2010, we get them from SAS dubai $36600 landed in Guinee. chassis is same as bakkie but with much softer suspension. very good truck and suits the hard conditions, interior is huge but makes the car noisy (no insulation), however they are expensive to run, old truck 2004 with 304000km average cons 6.7 klms / litre, this one 68000km avg 7.2/litre, tyre life is very bad 30thou if youre lucky(each oil change 13l ) we have 36 PC(personel carriers) and bakkie cruisers(all 4.2 d) on the mine plus 16 old IFS 2.8 hiluxes still going, the owner operating costs , the cruisers win simply because of their long life some of the original ones hitting 800000kms, at the end of the day if it an't toyota we do'nt buy it.

i wonder what makes these vans so expensive??

Its not like it has a state-of-he art Motor or luxurious interior??

Plus the shape is timeless.

Id much rather just get a d4d.

I agree with Thys & Shane. Great vehicle but another case of Toyota South Africa being so full of themselves in trying to palm off this utilitarian vehicle (a damn good one) on a public that has sucked up their nonsense for so long they think they've actually succeeded in pulling the wool over our eyes. If they think they can continue this forever, they are going to fall down to earth with a hard bump when their all precious 'market share' starts falling.

Then let's hear their justification on why it has happened!!!

Almost makes me ashamed to drive one of their products!!!!

I said 'ALMOST"...........

That's why they say the Cruiser is King of Africa

mark we worked on a mine in tanzania as well, the client had land rovers, 200 and 300 seriers TDI's, don't like running down other makes and these were driven by expats, they had a light vehicle store with $2mill worth of spares but never managed to keep more than 50% of the vehicles running, major failures ,gearboxes, rear diff's,burnt wireing looms you name it put off LR's for life. I can't sit in the things knees and elbows banging into things only see out of half the windscreen, hear the new ones are vastly improved. funny how toyota always kick off a new vehicle properly from the start and keep it there. have a good toyota day.

Awesome cars, these Troopies.

I bought mine in October 2010, one of the very first sold by Toyota SA.

Made it into a full 7 seater, with some stuff added. The 3d rear door was done by Des Meano. :cooldude:

I still think Des Meano does a better doublecab conversion than Toyota themselves.Toyota used the same door as 76 with the wheel arch cut out although the double cab does not need it.Des Meano use a full door

Tokkie, it's quite a job, it stood 2 months at Meano's. Des strenghtened everything, and I instructed him to not use ANY body filler, only cut below the roof gutter, and fit a wind-up window (not a sliding one - I was concerned about rattles).

Cost was about R 20 000.........best money I EVER spent. The Troopy was featured in some Wegry magazine a while back, the issue with the Patrol on its cover, and something like "To Hell and Back" article. ;-)

It now basically has the same seating configuration as a VW Kombi. And the 2 benches fold flat and lever to form quite a big bed.
