Cameras - more on the debate around the SX50

Post by Harold »

Bridge cameras:
Further to the debate on the Canon SX50; what of the other makes?

The Fugifilm S1 was mention and ‘Pjjvdm’ was very happy with it.
Then there is Nikon as well as Sony – Sony looks very good.

Also what of the video abilities; can any of these cameras replace the need for a video camera?

Most of the cameras have a lot of additional features that probably push up the price, but are seldom used.
I think ultra zoom of 50+ is becoming more of a selling gimmick. If you want this kind of zoom then you need to go the SLR route with larger sensors and lens diameters; also be prepared to pay ‘BIG’ prices .

I would like to know what happens to all the older model cameras?

I beg to differ here. I enjoy the 65x zoom immensely on the SX60. The same lens on a SLR would cost me well over R100K. And it's not a gimmick. The image stabalizer they built into the unit is awesome and you can take handheld stills at full zoom. Here is one I took last week during the almost full moon..

Note that I have slightly modified it in Photoshop (contrast, sharpened slightly etc.)

It's much easier to carry around one of these units than lugging along a bag with all kinds of lenses to get the same effect with a DSLR camera.

You can also take proper video with the camera at 1080P (up to 60fps). It also has a nifty feature where you can take 240fps video and a lower resolution. The only drawback with the camera vs a video camera is that it records a maximum of 29m 59s segments. Other than that it takes better quality footage than my Sony handycam and you can also use the full zoom range while recording without the mics picking up the sound of the zoom lens motor

True, but I have found these cameras to have its limits as well, still sometimes wish I had a DSLR with a proper lense
