This is an excellent alternative to the C-Tek range at a lower cost.

Image

The Charger is described as:

FEATURES
Five-step fully automatic switchmode-mode battery charger and maintainer, designed for charging a variety of SLA (Sealed Lead Acid) batteries, widely used in motor bikes, cars and other vehicles. The batteries may be of various types, i.e.:

* WET/Flooded (Liquid Electrolyte),
* GEL (Gelatin type Electrolyte, absorbed into the plates),
* AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries.

Their capacity ranges from 12V/1.2Ah to 12/120Ah. The Benton BX-1 battery charger also charges batteries in cold conditions. Using state-of-the-art technology, the charger enables the recharging of the batteries to almost 100% of their original capacity. It recovers slightly sulphated batteries. It diagnoses and rescues drained batteries. It provides a trickle-charge and maintenance charging which increases battery life and gives superb performance. It also features low back-current drain and low ripple.

PRODUCT SAFETY FEATURES

* Electronically safe against User-errors. The Charger will not damage vehicle electronics. It is totally safe for months-long connections and maintenance of irregularly or seasonally used batteries, even while the charger is still connected to the vehicle. It provides optimal conditioning without damage. There is no risk of over-charging!

* Full protection against wrong connections and against short-circuits ensures safe charging operation.

* Provided with spark-protection mechanism. The charger will not commence charging upon connecting to the battery unless a charging mode has been selected. (F_D Note: This caught me on my C-Teks, and the battery ran flat :( ). This embedded feature eliminates the possibility of a spark that often appears during connections.

* Fully controlled by internal Micro-Computer Unit which makes it faster, powerful, reliable and smarter. It detects the state of charge of the battery plugged into it and initiates charging.

* Dust and Splash-proof (IP65).

* Double insulated.

Have just re-ordered new stock, have run out of stock.

Bennie, the Charger needs to "see" a nominal 12v source before it starts to charge. What we have done is to "jump start" the charger by placing either a normal battery charger over the dead battery, or even a quick boost from a working battery, so long as the 'dead' battery holds the 12v supply long enough to start the BX-1 charger. We revived a battery (don't know for how long - it was pretty shot to begin with) that only measured 6v with this technique.

Eric

I left it charging for a couple of days but the charging light stays on and it never goes to full. The voltage drops back to 10.8 volt if you remove the charger and let is stand for a while.

I will soon be receiving stocks of the Benton BX-2, big brother to the BX-1. This is an uprated charger and can also be used as a power supply. I will post a new thread on it as soon as I receive the stocks and have checked through the specifications.

I think one must not have too big an expectation from any Super-Duper Battery Charger.

If your battery is 18mnths old or older and has all the symptoms of being FUBAR then it probably is FUBAR and no battery charger/re-conditioner/miracle device can resusitate a calcified battery.

I've seen these chargers used to good effect on well maintained batteries especially effective in maintaining batteries in vehicles that stand for long periods.

With a Benton Charger - My Dad manages to keep his 12 yr old Celica run on its Original "Toyota Brand" battery, despite being away in this country for 90 days every year :o: :wink:

Marie,

Welcome to the forum! :thumbup:

Unfortunately, the units I have in stock are only suitable for 220-240 volts AC input, as in Europe and South Africa. In the USA, you would require chargers with 110-120V AC mains input, which are not imported into this country.

Do a web search for either Benton or C-Tek chargers, you might be lucky and find a Distributor closer to you with the correct unit.

Hi Steve,

Yes indeed.

Benton BX-1 @ R395.00 + R50 Speed Services Overnight to SA Main Centres,

Benton BX-2 @ R950.00 + RR85.00 Speed Services Overnight to SA Main Centres.

I have found a new Supplier of the BX-2 chargers which has allowed me to reduce prices on this unit by R335.00. These prices should remain firm for a while but are subject to exchange rate fluctuations.

Hi Eric
I want to get a charger for my aux battery system, and is looking at the Benton Chargers.
Question:
I see they are rated up to 120a/h. I have two aux batteries 110ah and 75a/h connected parrallel.
Would i be able to charge both those batteries with either the BX 1 or 2 ?

The BX2 will charge them in SERIES at up to 7A.

The BX1 only puts out 3A - probably a bit light for two batteries

Hi Tertius,

Theoretically you can charge them in parallel, but please don't do it. The charger will not be able to determine when it should switch charging modes. Always charge one battery at a time, then the charger will automatically select the appropriate charging mode according to the state of charge of the battery.

If you have to charge two batteries at once, please only do so with two batteries that are identical in all respects, type & size and preferably similar state of discharge.

Eric, are you still supplying these chargers or similar? Would it be safe to leave this charger connected to a battery, in a lock up garage, with my Hilux, with no supervision for long periods? I worry about charging batteries producing explosive gases, but I am also tired of jump-starting the truck every time I come to use it.
Thanks
Martin

Martin, yes indeed. I leave a charger permanently connected to 4 vehicles and 2 motor boats, no problems. The charger is designed for this, reverting to a trickle charger when the battery is full, but starting the charging cycle again when the battery voltage drops. Perfectly safe.
