Dakar Rally Recce Vehicles

Post by Traveler »

Last night started my annual dose of Dakar Rally. Again there was the roundup of what can be expected. However they also include info on the recce for the Dakar and how the route is mapped.

And still they use 3.0 D4D Hilux's to plan, drive, map and test the route. Not once, but three times.

I am also a Dakar addict - just wish they gave us more than 30 minutes a day. It is an enormous event in terms of the planning: 'back-up, catering, logistics, medical, route planning, navigation, news coverage etc'. Then there is the background of the participants, especially the privateers.

Taking all this into account, we could have at least two plus hours a day.
Pity there is not a dedicated channel - 'real time.'

Harold, I'd pay for a dedicated channel. Watching the days highlights at the moment.

I can kind of understand why we are only snubbed with 17-22minutes of production, their challenge is to record, edit on site and then still get it out to be aired in most countries at a reasonable time with the results from the same day. (Wish they would ad one hour of extra footage from the previous day).

Then you should also follow the waypoints online like I do. '

Actually know the results for the day long before the 10pm broadcast.

OT, but we did a organized Namib and dune trip last week. From the 15 vehicles, 5 were cruisers, 1 mazda and the rest were hilux's and Tunas, mostly 3 D4D. Only 1 Fortuner was a 4l. The 3l D4D's did as good the 4l.

I think apart from maybe the cruiser bakkie, the DC hilux and the Fortuner will be the SUV to buy as the Prados and Cruisers getting to expensive, and they are definitely not less inferior.

George, in think in that fine sand yesterday very few vehicles did not get stuck. Saw a few stuck Pajero's and then there were 2 stuck RAV4's as well.

I've got a friend racing a truck, I've searched for results about his progress but because he is not in the top ten I can't find anything. He also races a Hilux here in SA so I can ask the question here on the Hilux forum  Do you guys know whom I'm talking about and if you do do maybe have any info? :eh:
