I have just bough a second hand "Tropical" fridge/freezer, around 50L and busy testing it, so far so good.

An oldie but a goodie. :D

The fridge debate has re-entered our household !

Here's why:
For weekend use we have an old (I mean really old) 40 L Minus 40 mark I (must be about 20+years) - 12V only, no electronics, no 220V etc etc. The catch is that as a result of a lack of regulating electronics it is a little heavy on juice. A 102 A/h does not last the weekend.

For overlanding we use a 65L St/St Engel (small footprint but quite high). It is approx 5 years old and for a family of 5 works really well. Botswana / Zambia trip it took 1,5 sheep and 30kg of sausage for the group.
Only hiccup is that you need to add a beercarton and put cooldrinks and beer on top, otherwise it freezes.

Now I have ordered an Imagine Trailvan. Would like a modern fridge / freezer that will fit the hole and must be light on batteries. Intention is to add solar charging capability. What do I buy? If I use it as a freezer for the meat and frozen products and ice (therefore only opened once or twice a day) I am tempted to go for a thick insulation type job such as the Campfrig - they have a 40 L and a 70 L with some fancy electronic modes that can be selected to save battery power.

Any other suggestions?
Cheers

Hi Herbie,

Option1: Engel (40l) x2 - I have 1 x food & 1 x drinks. (The latest 40L Turbofan units ONLY draw 2 Amps of power.)

Option2: See http://www.discountcamping.com.au/index ... ne/fridges

Common sense also needs to prevail re: At what temp the fridge needs? to be set... (hence how much power it will use)
Why must it stand in the sun/hot place? (As some peple do)
Why have it running on max @ night. (Often better to keep drinks out @ night when the temps are low, i.e. pre cool before loading fridge in the morning, hence does not have to work so hard.)
Don't re-stock all at once, use "6 in, 6out" concept. (I am busy developing a system for this. Will share when done..)
Always keep fridge full. Cooling down "plain air" chows power.
Ensure loads of ventilation around the OUTSIDE of the fridge.
Etc, etc.

Will chat again.

I don't like arguments, so I went with 60L Ebgel Combi. On the one side I can freeze the meat and make ice, on the other side the vegies and beer are kept cold without freezing....

There is something about having ice in your whiskey even if you have not seen a shop for a week! :D :D :D
