What test - when is a knive sharp enough ?

Post by Bulletjie-3 »

I should have put it under "workshop" - this tool is heavy. I got a "Rambo jnr" 300mm long, 7mm at the top blade with the following details on the blade - * RODGERS SHEFFIELD ENGLAND with some other numbers on the other side. Now my question is how do I sharpen it to last ?

Some knife shops will sharpen it for you for R20.00(they usuallt send it away), it's well worth it, or even the guys that make knives.

When is a knife sharp? (it's either sharp, or it's not- I was taught there's no "enough")

When you rest the cutting edge of the blade on your thumbnail without any pressure, and slightly draw it across. It should leave a cut.

if the knive is a real JR the steel will be higher in carbon than normal
(that is why they rust)
it will give the knive a VERY sharp edge however it will not last that long
so to sharper the JR we usualy give it 2 edges
one (for a lack off a better word) low on the lansky sharpner, and the final as high as possible ie about 30 degrees
it will render the blade sharp (enough) but the edge will last

keep the blade oiled !!!!!(gun oil mixed with castor oil was what the "old people" said )
do not use a water stone to sharpen

What is the reason for being so heavy ? So far there is no rust, ok it's not getting used acually.
This no is on the other side 27C2360^ ( the last one is an arrow ). Any meaning ?

Do some research and see if they were ever issued to military personnel. The fact that it has a serial no could be explained by this. The arrow on British military hardware used to signify "Retired out of service" .... without such a proof mark it would have been illegal for a civilian to have in their possession.

I was shown by a professional many years ago; hold the knife with the cutting edge upwards and towards a lightsource, the shiny bits on the cutting edge are blunt spots, a perfectly sharpened knife will have no shiny spots.

I use a Lansky sharpener, you clamp the knife into a holder and you can descide what angle you need on either side, sharper angles goes blunt sooner.

The angle at which you should sharpen it, depends almost completely on the application. This can vary from 17 degrees for razor-like sharpness, to 30 degrees for heavy duty work, like cutting cardboard. A good angle to try for everyday use, I've found, is 20 degrees.

That explain why the razorblades dont last that long, because of their very sharpness they goes blunt that quicker.

Good one Jarus.

I have recently started to us a diamond stone to hone me knifes.
I found with carbon compound knifes it takes considerable time to get a knife really sharp when using the lansky and other kits.
It takes a bit of practice to get the edge right, but once you find the edge it goes quick to keep your knifes sharpen.
