Old fridge topic

Post by george »

Hi guys.

This is a very old debate and has been discussed on many a forum.A normal Fridge(R1000) vs your danfoss operated fridge(R5000).
Can you realy cause so much damaged when you drive and it is switch off?
A lot of caravans have them in.I spoke to guy that have driven with his caravan over many dirt roads and his fridge is till working after 4 yours. He only switches it on once he is parked.I also remebered in the good old days when my dad used to fish in Henties. They would take a normal freezer on a trailer.
My thinking is to get a bar fridge and run it of my inverter. The idea is to only run it when we are parked for the night.
Has somebody tested this?

Hi George,

What damage are you talking about? I used my 3-way freezer for many years over many types of terrain without problems, even made ice. Depends on how you use it. No moving parts to be damaged. But if the flame blows out and the valve doesn't close, then you'll have plenty damge with beeeg fires........

Oh, OK then.

I have seen people using those fridges for camping. If you use them with an inverter and battery, the battery will not last as long as with a 12 v compressor because the inverter is probable 60% efficient. Just something to keep in mind.

George I also feel it is very expensive to buy a 12v Danfoss operated fridge but believe me it is the best investment that you can do for your camping needs 8) . Your idea of running a inverter and a 220v fridge will propably work but it will be consuming your battery power very fast and then you are stucked with only a cool box. :!:

I think Weaco is now also operating with the danfoss compressor and it is much cheaper than the other brands, so before taking your bar fridge and invertor to operate on 12v reconsidder the pro's and con's.

I also believe the bar fridge is not made to handle the robust conditions and it might just break. I have a 40l Engel permanently mounted at the rear of the bakkie and I never had any problem. It is the best thing I could ever buy myself :D

Hy sal baie meer trek as 'n opstart.

Nou is ek tevrede.Ek moet maar spaar vir 'n Engel
BTW as hy a laptop charge trek hy so 3Amps

George.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeMQDqdjMKo

So vra jouself die vraag, is dit 'n necessity of 'n nice to have?

Let me throw my 2cW in here after Bennie. As most guys here I have been camping and caravaning for many years to various places with and without electricity. I spent many a time in the bush with a cooler box and loads of ice both to keep it cool and to use in the B&C. Then I decided to buy a fridge/freezer :!:

After looking at the various makes I couldn't really come up with an excuse to pay such serious money for something that was to be used once every two months or so. I started looking in the junkmail for a second hand unit. What I found was a 40L Tropical fridge/freezer that runs off a danfoss compressor and has 4 speed settings. It gets the temp down to -16 @ 23deg which is sufficient.

This old fridge cost me R1200 and has served me well so far. yes I have had one or two problems with the power supply but that is sorted now and cost me all of R50 to fix.

Guess what I am trying to say is that I will never go anywhere again without it. Not having to remember to put the cooler box in the shade or to buy more ice is a wonderful thing. And hey, dont forget that if the battery runs flat for whatever reason, it still keeps the beers cold the same as a CB for a while.

IMO a camping fridge/freezer is one of the necessities for the camper and I don't know how I ever got along without it.

I think it is one of those things that when you have it you will start using it a lot more and then
you would think to yourself how did I live with out it.
On the other hand you will not die if you dont have one.
Luckily we have Jacques on the forum where you can rent it from

http://www.4xforum.co.za/?showcontent&global[_id]=338

Baie inligting hier:

Baie inligting oor ander goeters ook.
