Trailers to choose.......... Many options

Post by Traveler »

After being a guest of weighbridges a couple of times this December I am now even more committed to getting myself a trailer (again).

Other advantage for me of the trailer is that I can leave it mostly packed standing in the garage to leave when I want.

We need to make provision for sleeping at least 4. And with small children they cannot be exiled to a bow tent 16km's down the road.

The other advantage is that you do not loose a packet of money when you trade in your current vehicle on a newer one that is fitted with R100k worth of accessories. So I can actually reduce all the kit that is on the Hilux, and that will be on the next Hilux.

The trailers on the list:
1. Buzzard Industries - Overlander
2. Echo4x4 - Echo4
3. Conqueror - Comfort
4. Afrispoor - Mongoose
5. Bantam - Off road trailer
6. Off Trax
7. Summit - Everest

Any ideas of personal experience??

As I have a load of camping and travel kit, I do not need to purchase a trailer that is kitted to the hilt. I'll just throw my stuff into it.

What I'd like to have with the trailer:
Water Tank
Electrical system - ability to add solar easily and ability to plug into 220V power supply when in a camping site.
RTT with add a room setup standard
Kitchen unit, with gas and stove
Braked axle

Heinich,

Hi Heinrich,

Ek gebruik self 'n Echo 4 wa en is baie in my skik. As jy belangstel laat weet my dan gee ek jou 'n nommer.

(http://metalian.co.za/trailers/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

So die Bush baby het my R27K gekos, met 'n Echo Rooftop tent, fridge slide, slide at the back en battery system.

Hi there

I bought a Wildebeest trailer last year, after searching for a long time and weighing up costs vs benefits. The trailer worked out much more bang for your buck than any of the other trailers:
- Very strudy construction
- 2.5 ton brake axle
- Very flexible in terms of extra fittings and customisations

The trailer gets delivered to your door. The aftersales service is impecable, as Juan (owner) really goes the extra mile to satisfy his customers.

You go on your first trip, and then Juan comes and collect the trailer and sorts out anything that might be bugging you... for free..

We have done a Kgalagadi trip for 15 days last year and you may know the well known corrugations on those roads... No problems whatsoever.

PM me if you want more details or visit :
http://www.wildebeestoffroad.co.za

For the more rugged, not just dirt roads, you can bank that this trailer will get you there... The latest models also now come with highlift jack points and recovery points as well...

My opinion : Real good value for money.

Heinrich, as ek nou maar mag kom ammok maak in jou hok...... What about the Jurgens XT 140 Trailer. What I do like about this particular trailer is that it has 2x water tanks mounted on the sides of the loadbin, and it is really spacious. Also it is really well built and I like the sharp angled rear end that improves the departure angle of the trailer. The side door and slide can easily be converted into a slide out kinthen unit with your excellent DIY skills.

I think it is worth a look. Happy hunting.

Thanks Johan.

It was on the list, but floundered very soon. Unfortunately I am not at all interested in a trailer that has a top opening lid. Been there once, and burnt the t-shirt.

Dit sal my net irriteer!

Laaste ding.

ja dis my probleem ook.Ek dink ek gaan oorlaai wees as ek alles laai.

Seriously tough decision.... Some really good trailers out there and also some not so great ones... I think you need to have a very clear picture of where you want to go with your trailer, what all your needs are going to be with respect to the family and then find something to match that. Family comfort and convenience come with additional weight issues, so its always a balancing act. Bought our Bushwakka 4x4 trailer 12 years ago when the offroad trailers were pretty basic and have spent a lot of money last year to modify and bring it up to a standard that meets our needs today. Unfortunately it is only on a trip that you figure out other options that would make life a lot easier. The dilemma is also that some places are inaccessible when towing a trailer, particularly with all the comforts ...

So good luck with the search, take your time because it is huge financial outlay, and try and consider as many possible camping scenario's as possible before making your decision.

I had the Afrispoor trailer and was very happy with the trailer. It was one of the first trailers that Afrispoor made. I sold the afrispoor and bought an conqueror comfort.
I am not happy with the conqueror at all. Endless trouble, water pump replaced 4 times. Tent was not fitted properly. Workmanship poor. Not all the bolts and nuts were tightended and had to do it myself. The axle bolts that connect the axle to the chassis was not tightended. Endless hassles. The quality checks are not in place at conqueror and they are more interested in the Australian market as they export about 1000 trailers per month.
One positive of the trailer is the layout and the bed, I would never buy another conqueror again.

The good thing is that we have had a trailer that did not work for us. Was due to a couple of reasons, and also maybe because the design of the trailer was archaic. On all our visits to various trailers we are doing the visits together. Therefore we know exactly what we want, and also what we most definitely do not want.

Clint, thanks on the advice and experience with Conqueror. I am really feeling the service level at Echo and Conqueror is equally low.

The guys with the smaller companies are a lot more serious about doing business.

Echo (Head Office) in PTA does not know what service is.

I pre arranged everything with the salesmen and when I got there nothing was ready for collection and 3 hours later did I drive out with a water tank and load bin/clothing drawers :aggresive:

The outlets in Ct is a hell of a lot better butthey order all their stuff from the head office in PTA.

Net so vinnige terugvoering.
