fridge?

Post by ecotech »

hi there,

i am faced with a bit of a problem. i am going away for the christmas weekend to go fish and relax and get away from all that is around me everyday of my life. cars, idiots in taxi`s, idiots in porche`s (oops sorry scorpion), morons in dinky toy cars that think 2 ton loaded 4x4`s have the stopping power of a lamborgini diablo and turn infront of you on minute 99.

well the problem is, i have a problem keeping the food actually the meat frozen...

anyone close to the westrand area that will be willing to lend or rent me their fridge for 5 days?

i really hope so.

thanks

Martin

What I do is go to the butcher and buy my meat just before I leave. Have everything even the wors vacuum packed. My butcher does not charge extra. The stuff like pork chicken and wors (spices turn sour after a couple of days) I eat first and your beef steaks can easily last 7 days or more if it was freshly cut and vacuum packed when you bought them. Don't buy pre vacuumed matured steak to keep that long. I dunno about sheep I don't eat it but I guess it can also last a couple of days. Got a Coleman 6 and 7 day cool box that's all.

hi Martin. Bennie is reg.
As jou steak miskien 'n geurtjie of kleurkie ontwikkel moenie worry nie.

Pieter, any ice distributor will sell dry ice. The one main company that comes to mind is 'Ice for Africa'.

Martin, I would help you out and loan you my fridge, if only the blerrie thing worked :x

Dry ice, normal ice, ice packs all work well but once you have used a 12v freezer you will never go back (unless your fridge doesnt work    )

I mistook myself once with dry ice, when I wanted to take out the meat for the first evening's braai after setting up camp it was frozen solid, even though I put it in unfrozen. Dry ice is expensive though but works well.

Hoop jy kom reg :P

I want to do a trip to the Richtersveld next year but I don't have a fridge.(or the money to buy one)
I did some searching on the net about the dry ice.
One of the web sights recommended leaving the small drain tap open at the bottom of the cooler box to let the gas escape otherwise they say you will pop the lid?
If I buy the dry ice the day before I leave can I store it in my freezer?

The alternative is to rent a fridge for the duration of the trip. I rented one for our 3 week trip to Namibia this year and it worked out to about R700. Rentals can be done from Jacques Basson from Overland Camp Rentals (viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1161&p=9141).
