water tanks

Post by lukestrugnell »

I would like to fit water tanks to my lux
Where is best to fit them on the vehicle (underbody) as want load bin for other stuff.

Is it possible to fit where spare wheel should go?

What makes and fitment centres would you suggest?

I plan on puting two spares on the outside of the cage or on the cage tailgate leaving the undearneath clear

I know on LR defenders the standard place is the rear left fender.
Is there a standard on the sfa lux?

I saw a guy at a camp site the other day who used lengths of PVC drain pipe on his roofrack for water tanks. You can buy a end cap to seal off the one side and a reduction on the other side to bring fit a tap. I suppose if you fit pipes like that in may places like under the chassis if you can find space or inside the loadbin as well if you use your imagination.

Agreed, that is a good idea! could line inside of the canopy roof , its out of the way at least. One thing though, what about the movement of the water when turning etc? Petrol tanks have plates in them, so should a water tank but perhaps by using piping it would work the same way?
Any ideas?

Hey Luke!

Here is a photo of how we inherited our Hilux:
Water tank on top of fuel tank.jpg
You can see the 60L water tank on top of a 110L petrol tank.

Pro's of having the tank here:
The tank is out of the way and in space that is the most difficult to access.

Con's of having it here: The water (and weight) is high up, it would be better to have this weight lower down. The tank has to be filled through the window with a pipe -akward. The tank totally blocks any view trough the rear-view mirror.

In fact the water tank in the picture is better suited to a 4X4 station wagon e.g. Prado/ Cruiser as the one side is slanted to fit in behind the back seats.

So, depending on our storage/ drawer system, we plan to replace this tank with a lower, rectangular 60L tank, which might allow for vision through the rear-view mirror or a further ammo crate on top of it. We will also fit an external filling hole with lockable cap.

4x4 Mega World down here fit a 80L water/ fuel tank above the spare wheel. It is an odd shaped tank. This makes the spare move down between one and two inches. They assure me their tank does not affect ground clearance. I have not seen it yet.

The other thing to think about is whether you want a custom made tank or if you just get one of the many plastic options available at 4x4 places.

Hope that helps, S

Those pipes sound like a good idea. Black pipes on the roof rack can give you nice warm water to wash with after a day in the sun.

The pipes on the roof messes with the centre of gravity, which is something you need to be aware of and does influence the handling of your vehicle. You can fit those pipes underneath the vehicle along the chassis rails. There is a lot of unused space where these pipes can be fitted and shielded from stones and rocks.

A drop of jik would do the trick - very little. try and go with 2 - 3 ppm of chlorine in the mix. Thats good enough to keep the bugs dead but wont taste like poolwater

I used Milton tablets(to clean tietie bottels).Just rinse it a couple of times.in my experience you will always have a after taste.
Maybe because mine was a S/S tank. That is why i dilute it with a bit of Scotch
In my new van I am just going to carry 2x25 litre plastic cans. Can carry it where I want and filling up is not an issue.
With a built in tank you will have to carry piping to re-fill.

I have two jerry's on the trailer for water, but considering a 45l - 55l moulded tank to fit somewhere below the vehicle. There is plenty space.

Milton should do the job. Use it all the time on bottles so I have a supply.
