3.0D4-D : 4x2 or 4x4?

Post by PhatMyles »

Hi All

We are in the market for a double cab bakkie (When I say we, I mean SWAMBO). We have agreed on the New Toyota Hilux. Looking at our budget, we have managed to narrow it down to either a 2.7 or a 3.0D4-D. If we go the D4-D route, we would like to consider getting it in 4x4. However, we are concerned that the amount of our 4x4 requirement is very low... we do about 80% on tar. We thought of getting just a 4x2 and getting recovery gadgets (high lift jack, sand mats, tow ropes, snatch ropes, etc) for times when we run into "difficulty". This will be much more cost effective.

Now, how far will a 4x2 go with the mentioned recovery gadgets, compared to a 4x4? is it a viable option to just get the 4x2, or will 4x4 be essential?

Thanks for your input.

Hi and welcome!

You could prob. get to 90 - 95% of the destinations a 2x4 can get (generally speaking if your on road is 80%)

Having said that......once you have a 4x4 you will not easy go back to a 2x4 :wink2:

Welcome.

Daar doer in Suidwes sê hulle: "'n 4x4 vat jou net dieper in die moeilikheid in."

My 2cw wil be that, considering where you live, the 4x4 wil open up new possibilities and before you know it you wil definitely do more 4x4 exploring.
Why? Because you can.

Even if you use 4x4 for only 1% of the time, it is still better to have than a 4x2. In any case, you will struggle with recovery gear and a 4x2 if you are alone in a difficult situation. My 2cw.

By the time you have spent all the money on recovery Gizmo's, it will cost you the same as a 4x4.
When you have a 4x4 then you will again need the recovery things to you go further into the bush.
You then go to places that were previously inaccessible to you before.
The decision is yours...you know where you want to go & what you want to do.
A lot of people want to upgrade from 4x2 to 4x4 after getting to know their vehicles & then wanting to explore beyond the beaten track.
The wrong decision could cost you a lot more money in the long run.
Then again some people buy caravans or bush trailers & after a trip or two they realize that the life style is not for them & end up selling at a loss.
Go out with friends and experience the 4x4 way of life, before making up your mind.
Think about it before you make the wrong decision.
Good luck on your decision
