Top 10 Scenic Drives in the RSA

Post by ThysdJ »

Please name you choice of the most scenic (challenging) roads/tracks you have driven lately. Pictures will also be welcome. The only criteria for these scenic drives are:

• It must be on public land. In other words, not on somebody's farm etc etc
• It must be free to use at any time. In other words not a 4x4 trail or in a National park or game reserve.
• It must be in the RSA borders. (Sani pass will count as it is in no-man's land)

Thys, Just to be pedantic, Sani Pass is in RSA, however you do have to have a passport to use it as the border post is 11Km from the border. The true border between RSA and Lesotho is at the top where the Lesotho border is. Just a point of interest... The border between Lesotho and RSA is roughly on the watershed of the Drakensberg. Anything that flows East is RSA, Anything that flows West is Lesotho. Therefore Sani Pass is RSA land, the only true "no mands land" in the world is Antartica. Anyway that is only a point of interest.
Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.

Craig, I see your pedanticness, and I raise you some more pedanticness   I was thinking again about Sani, it wont qualify for this one, simply because you cant go up there at 1:30am as the border post will be closed.   It is still damn scenic though, whether it is between border posts or not...

All of the above mentioned, although truth be told, I haven't yet had the good fortune to have visited them all but there is abundant natural beauty anywhere you go in this land of ours (a little sparse in the Free State flats, maybe) but it all depends on your perspective. You become accustomed to your own surroundings and don't always see the beauty that a stranger to your area would. It almost seems unfair to single out just some. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
