How to use your Snatch Strap!

Very helpful but one question.
I see that the bakkie being recovered from the water at the end of the clip has the bonnet open (this is to minimise damage should something come loose). If the recovery is not in a straight line the bonnet will interfere with your view. Is it still wise to lift the bonnet? By the way I have never seen someone being recovered that lifted the bonnet. Your comments pls

This is my opinion on the open bonnet story I posted on the cruiser forum earlier tonight:

We actually discussed that on 4x4community, and I for one won't do that(but that's just me),
Firstly I'd like to see where I'm going and what the other vehicle is doing.....very few of my snatch recoveries have been as smooth and controlled as the one in that clip, things can happen quick and random and if you cannot see what's happening, it can become a big problem.
Secondly, because some snatch recoveries are so violent it will smash your bonnet into your windscreen.

The bonnet stay this is the lever that keep the bonnet open is not strong enough to handle such force, I do not open my bonnet when snatching, but might consider opening it when winching.

Thanks, the only reason for the bonnet is most probably to soften the blow of a potential projectile. I agree with you Bartho - fortunately never needed to be snatched to date

My friends and I get stuck every weekend....and sometimes during the week as well .....most of the time it could have been avoided by just going around the impossible bit, but every time we get to practice our recovery skills.
Then when things go really wrong as it did a few weeks ago at Vleesbaai when my friend's colt broke the front propshaft on the most difficult part of the trail, we damaged the winch, and my bakkie was overheating every 5 minutes, we were so used to doing recoveries, we could stay calm, make rational decisions and get us both out with minimal effort.
