Problem with hazards on an '88 Surf

Post by Beastly Black »

Hi All,

I wonder if anyone can help us, or has had this problem before.

Our indicaters on our '88 Hilux Surf works perfectly but as soon as we try the hazards there is a buzzing noise coming out of the switches. I have replaced the relay however this has not changed anything. :?

Any ideas :?:

Thanks!

Hi Beastly

When you say you have buzzing noises at the switches is it near the emergancy indicator switch or the indicator switch or does the realy buz? And when this happens what does the indicators do?

Hi
The buzzing sound is coming from the relay, when the ignition is on the indicators work fine, but as soon as you put the hazards on yhey stop and the relay starts buzzing. with the ignition off and you use the hazards the relay also buzzes.

It sounds like the hazard switch maybe faulty and not making proper contact. Or there is a bad earth on the hazard circuit.

Most probably your indicator globe's wattage may be too high thus they pull to much current when all four is switched on simultaneously, or there is a voltage leak in the wiring somewhere. Thus the sum of the currents when the hazards are switched on, overpower the flasher-relay.

Start off by trying different wattage globes.

Many years ago when I was a laaitie I had a similar problem on my motorbike. The stock globes were 21CP (17W) and I tried replacing them with 21W globes, but the current drawn by two globes killed the flasher, but if I removed the one the other one worked fine.

Let us know what your investigation yields.
