Propshaft center bearing

Hello

At a recent service, on the mechanics recommendation, my '93 4Y Raider's prop shaft center bearing was replaced. A few thousand km later it has developed a screech/whistle from the propshaft when in motion after a few km from cold. It exists with gearbox in neutral and with engine off, so long as the vehicle is in motion. The frequency of the noise matches propshaft rotational speed when slowing down to a stop. The propshaft in the area of the center bearing and the bearing housing gets pretty hot, much hotter than the rest of the shaft. I have greased the universal joints and the sliding joint but it has made no difference. I'm sure it is the center bearing making the noise.

The replacement bearing cost under R300 plus installation. Calling around, a Toyota dealer quoted just over R1200 for a new center bearing and Autozone R112. This is a huge difference and my thinking is that I have the non-genuine bearing installed and it is a poor quality dud. Should I cut my losses and fit the Toyota R1200 bearing...Any thoughts/opinions appreciated?

Yes, cut your losses.

Ongelukkig is goedkoop koop ook duur koop.

Die belangrike goed soos gaskets, bearings, etc. moet altyd GENUINE OE Parte wees.

Jammer om te hoor... :?

Hi Bruce,

Welcome to the Hilux forum. :P

There was a post similar to this a while ago, I seem to recall the Dealer said he had fitted a genuine article and he did not. But he did at least make good his 'mistake'.

Having said that, is the centre bearing itself not individually replaceable - i.e. use the old centre carrier and replace just the bearing with a well-known one such as SKF? Or is it an odd size?

Sorry Bruce, not much help - I haven't replaced a centre bearing for zonks and then it was an old Opel Station Wagon, not a Hilux.

Eric

The centre bearing has a rubber mounting and more often than not its the rubber that gives in.

So the Midas/Autozone ones are no good then? Bummer!!

I would at least let the garage that installed it sort it out, they might even credit it towards the cost of a new genuine OEM part. Surely even a Pirate one should last longer than a few thousand kilos?

I am not sure about the Midas / Autozone ones but my CB was also replaced about 10 000 kms 1year ago when my propshaft was serviced and I saw the other day when taking pics of the Load Sensing Proportioning Valve that the rubber did not look good. But I would not just accept the stealer price of R1200. Maybe someone can investigate the option of going to a dedicated bearing place like bearing man or SKF. They might sell you an OE one at a much better price who knows :?

I hate pirate parts due to how unreliable they are. The parts never last long, and doesn't always fir perfectly.

I love the price on pirates though...

ja but you get pirates and pirates. I for one will only buy something at the stealer if I know for sure you can not get a good quality alternative anywhere

I was priveledged to drive Wessels Lux when I went for a service (priveledged cos: "NO ONE DRIVES HIS LUX!")

I immediately noticed a bad shudder on take off and something like clutch-slip. :o

He said yeah, his centre bearing was stuffed: but said it's just the rubber mount that goes.

Enjoyed driving it but would never swop mine for his, my gearbox changes more positively and his brake conversion had me irritated big time, was like driving my wife's Verso :!:

Like Wessels said: "conversions are OK, but they're just not HILUX :!: "

Cheers

Hi Guys,

How do you knwo when it's time to service the propshaft assembly (front to back). The reason why I'm asking is this weekend I heard a new sound eminating from underneath my bakkie after I bottomed it out over a crescent. It made like a belly-sound when driving afterwards for a few hundred meters or so and then went away.

I bottomed it out again (just need to add that it wasn't a hard knock) and samething happened. It's a 94 SFA with 130000km on clock of which at least 45% was done off-road.

Hi all

I'm just kick at this thread to check exactly how dead it is.

Anybody ever seen or have some experience with underbelly protection (modifications) to protect the center bearing? I also have a long range fuel tank down there that would also benefit.

I got a bit stuck the other day playing in some "sand" I will attempt to attache a picture or two.

If there is no option to protect this area I don't see the point in buying the expensive stuff, the new one from Midas (R344) is going in tonight.

Thought, opinions..

Haven't been on here for a while will try to post an update on the accident, the big fix, and fuel injection.

Cheers
