Rear axleshaft seen better days
So today I was removing my rear axleshafts to have the bearings and seals replaced and I noticed this on the long shaft (drivers side)....

Not Nice
Do you need a replacement or have you got 1 sorted?
Let me know and I can see if there's a loose 1 around for you.

Re: Rear axleshaft seen better days
Mr B, I only have a load of trash lying around unfortunatly
But
My M8 has a quite a good few spares for the SFA's and newer hiluxes in his yard. It's just a pity that the newer 1's which are coming in are so badly smashed
If you looking for something, PM me and I can look around at his place for you, gonna try and get there the weekend for some stuff.

Re: Rear axleshaft seen better days
Ag you know in fairness its probably the original axle from 1996. For the last almost 5 years it has withstood the lex so I really cant complain.
Thankfully I had a spare (thanks to Chris Rebuilder) so I've swapped it in, no mess no fuss.
My concern is when I fit the crawler box (January hopefully), how long it'll hold up. Guess I'll just have to wheel the hell out of it and see!

Re: Rear axleshaft seen better days
When ever a V8 conversion is put into a lux, one has to make sure the rear diff is an import diff. As I understand the shaft is 3mm thicker and can withstand a bit more abuse.
And another neat little trick. When ever you take out the shaft, paint a thin white line on the shaft. Then when ever you take it out again you will be able to see if you've twisted the shaft with too much right foot

Re: Rear axleshaft seen better days
Simple fix... just swap the left and right side once yearly... that way it will get bent back straight!
Or even easier... just re-install as is... engage reverse... and slam the accelerator... should twist it back nicely!

Have you seen what happens to a piece of "blou draad" if you keep on bending it in opposite directions? And personally... I'll rather pay for a shaft than a gearboxMr_B wrote:Simple fix... just swap the left and right side once yearly... that way it will get bent back straight!

Re: Rear axleshaft seen better days
Mr B, the only problem with your shaft swapping (I feel a little uncomfortable saying that) theory is that the local diff has different length shafts left to right.
Interestingly the import shafts have been know to take over 100 degrees of twist before snapping. I'd imagine the local shafts are a bit less (being thinner and having less splines) but I'm sure they could easily handle 60 degrees. So although those splines look nasty I'd imagine they'll be fine for years to come.
If it wasn't such a costly affair changing my diff to an import one I'd do it in a heartbeat...

Re: Rear axleshaft seen better days
Why not just swap rear axles with someone who does less extreme 4x4ing... or has a 4Y engine(never going to twist an axle with that amount of power)...
Come on... be brave(or stoopid)... you can sort out the difference in length with an angle grinder, welding rig and a hell of a lotta luck!
Your gearmax axle... does it have a selectable locker?

Re: Rear axleshaft seen better days
I'm actually impressed, when I had the V8 fitted in 2006 everyone said the Gearmax axle will never last, I'll break everytime I touch the throttle. 4 years later and it's not broken yet...just a bit twisted.
The rear gearmax diff-lock was fitted to that axle around 2002, the front locker around 2004. I'm not sure what else they did then, but I think the shafts are probably still the originals.

The axles shouldn't just break for nothing. It's when you've got the wheels spinning at redline and they suddenly find grip.... So if this is not your driving style, they should be fine

Ja Cassie, and the auto box goes a long way to reduce those shock loads that cause breakages.
The Hilex has 35" tyres and an engine 3 times more powerful than stock, and I never broke any drive train components. At the same time I had the Hilex I also had a V8 disco, with 29" stock slicks and a stock engine. On that I broke the front, centre and rear diffs, as well as the rear propshaft 4 times. The landy is not be very strong to start with, but the Hilux has a pretty tough drivetrain from the showroom floor.

Re: Rear axleshaft seen better days
Mr B, sorry I missed your question, yes it does. If someone particularly wants to swap then great, otherwise it should be on the market sometime next year....Mr_B wrote:Why not just swap rear axles with someone who does less extreme 4x4ing... or has a 4Y engine(never going to twist an axle with that amount of power)...
