PLEASE HELP DIFF LOCK NOT WORKING

Post by Bradmclaren »

hi,
can anyone please help?
i have a 1999 hilux 3L D 4x4,

2 weeks after buying it we went to transkei and the diff literally snapped while leaving Port St Johns. from there the hilux hasn't stopped giving problems.

the diff was fixed by a diff specialist and said that all is well.
2 weeks later, we went 4x4ing and needed rear diff lock. this bakkie has an electronic diff lock pump and for sum unknown reason the stupid thing will only engage when pushing the switch, but when pushing it off the pump will not disengage the lock.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

we have sent it to an auto electrician and they say all the wiring is right. but still it wont disengage.
we have to take the pump off the diff and disengage it manually.

any help will be much appreciated.

thanks

Hi Brad and welcome to the forum!

I'm not familiar with your diff-lock actuation, but take it to Mayfair gearbox and diff centre. They're in Dyer Street
(up the alley next to Dulux Paint Centre). Ask to speak to Owen ... he'll tell you immediately what the possible problems are and what the relative costs would be. Could be something small like a return spring on the fork. They do good work and guarantee it. ;-)

My '99 has an electronic thing that engage the diff lock not a pump.
Sometimes when you disengage there is tension on the sideshafts and the difflock will NOT disengage.
Push the button to switch it off, if you don't hear it click and the light stays on, then while driving slowly turn sharp right and then sharp left so that the wheels can travel at different speeds. That should release the tension on the shafts and you will all of the sudden hear the clik sound when the diff-lock disengage

Never put the difflock on on tar and if you did use it on gravel, make very sure that it disengaged before you ravel on tar
